“Didn’t you guys already do that?” I questioned. It had been the biggest pivotal moment for Greg and Lilly last week, but now it seemed like everything was blowing up around them.
“We did, but she wants us to go on dates withotherpeople.”
“What?” Max looked from Greg to both Jack and me with a confused look.
“I don’t want to do it, but after this week, we’ve had a huge setback and I’m willing to try anything this lady wants us to.”
“Even if it means ruining your relationship with Lilly?” Jack spoke up next.
“There are rules. We have to tell each other when we are going on the date.”
“That still seems messed up.” I added. I would hate the thought of Erica going on a date with someone else. I shivered in the booth and finished my beer, wanting something stronger now.
“Is there any other way out of this?” Max asked.
“I don’t think there is.” Greg looked defeated and I took in Jack, who had his brain racking. He was always the one to figure this stuff out with girls. Jack was always the one going on dates and dodging girls who were running after him.
“What if we fake it?” Jack snapped his fingers with elated words, like it was the best idea ever.
“How?” Greg asked him. I could see the hope there, that what Jack was thinking might actually work, and I fucking hoped so.
“Ask a girl out here and we can set up a club night tomorrow.”
“How in the hell would that help this, Jack?” Max snapped at him. Honestly it wasn’t the best idea, but I wouldn’t have come up with anything better.
“How would that be fake, though?” Greg asked, clinging onto how he could use the idea.
“Lie to Lilly about going on a date with her before getting there. Have the girl meet you at the club, walk in together, and just lie. I guarantee Lilly will blow a casket before whatever girl you choose has time to say anything about it.”
“That is a horrible idea,” Max spoke up again.
“I have to second that.” I raised my hand in solidarity to Max.
“What do you two suggest then?” Greg’s tone turned back to bitterness and I could tell he was seriously considering this.
“What if it doesn’t work?”
“What if she leaves and never wants to speak to you again?”
“What if she never forgives you?”
Max and I kept spitting out questions until Greg raised his hand to stop us.
“I’ll ask a random girl out for tomorrow night, have her meet me at the club. I’ll put my arm around her shoulders and make up some lie.”
I shook my head at Greg and what he was thinking of doing.
“It’s definitely a way around what the counselor wants us to do, and damn it, it might just work.”
“And what if it all blows up in your face?” Max asked.
“What if it doesn’t?” Jack countered and lifted his glass to his idea.
“I’ll go ask her.” Greg pointed to a girl who had just come up to the bar and was talking to Holden. Without missing a beat, Greg got out of the booth and made his way over to the girl.
“What have you done?” Max said through clenched teeth to Jack once Greg was out of earshot.
“Listen. He needed a plan and you know as well as I do that Lilly won’t just walk away. She’s as vengeful as he is. We just need her to see this side of things as well.”
