Chapter Twenty-Two

“Pack a bag.” The first words Law said to me when he walked in through the door on Monday morning. It had been almost a week we had been married and a day after the ceremony, Law was on his way out of town and off to a race. I opted to stay, getting everything I needed to taken care of.

I hadn’t told Law I had already gone to get my name changed and that I had been to the DMV to get a new identification card. I wanted it to be a surprise when he saw that now we were finally a part of the same family.

I was officially Anya Kane.

“What for?” I asked him, taking the clothes out of the laundry.

“We’re going on a honeymoon?” I raised an eyebrow at Law, who just flashed me a smile and walked away.

“What do I need to pack?” I yelled back, carrying the basket of clothes toward our room where Law had headed. He pulled a bag out of the closet and opened a few of my drawers and started to pack a bag for me. “What are you doing?”

I dropped the basket on the bed and placed my hands on my hips.

“Packing for you.” He passed me and kissed my forehead and then made his way into the closet. I didn’t try to stop him, but instead folded the newly clean clothes and put them away.

“Where are we going?” I asked when Law had finally stopped, looking around the room, probably trying to see if he had missed anything.

“Charger.”

I pointed to the bed and he snapped his fingers at me and blew me a kiss.

“Bristol,” he said absently.

“Tennessee?” I had seen that as his next stop on his racing tour. Law wanted me to come to his next race and damn, I was so ready for this. I had been itching to get back to the track to see my husband race.Husband. I hadn’t gotten over the fact I was able to call him that now.

“Yeah.” He walked back to the bathroom and then made his way over to the bag he had left open on the bed. I placed a hand on his as he closed the zipper. It was the first time he had looked at me since I walked in the room and I saw something in his eyes I wasn’t sure of.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, taking both his hands in mine and pulling him toward me.

His eyes searched mine before he spoke.

“Do you want to go?” His question was sheepish. The confident man who had just packed my bag for our honeymoon was nowhere in sight and I wanted him back.

“Of course I want to go.” But my answer wasn’t for the question I knew he was asking deep down. “I want to see you race, Law.”

I clarified my statement.

His shoulders fell and I reached for his face, bringing his lips to mine. I said the words I knew he needed to hear. Words that meant more to me than I think he even knew.

“I want to feel the rumble under my feet. I want to feel the rush in my heart when you start your engine. I want to watch you win, Law.”

-----

Blue jeans, black shirt, and a ball cap. Law’s attire for the last five days. I hadn’t had much to change into either. Shorts, a white tank, and one of Law’s caps I had stolen off the nightstand, right before we headed out the door.

Law learned his lesson from the first race and we ended up on a plane flying to Tennessee. I hadn’t planned on him seeing my name change that way, but it had happened and when Law looked at the plastic card I had held in my hands at the airport, I hadn’t expected him to break down in front of all of those people.

He held me close and the TSA person stepped back from us, letting us have our moment, even though she had no idea what was happening. Poor soul handed me tissues and whispered she was sorry, but it wasn’t her fault at all. It was technically Law’s fault, so I blamed him for us having to run to our plane.

When we had landed in Tennessee it seemed that Law had the whole week planned out for us. Driving around the mountains with a rental car he picked up. We hadn’t stayed in one place for too long, taking our sweet time from driving to different cities, and then finally reaching Bristol on the day Law would have to run practice laps and qualifiers.

Out of everything we had done, this race was what I was wanting the most from this weekend. I hadn’t gotten the chance to watch Law’s races today, with being holed up with Chloe and her new baby, not realizing she was that far along. I held baby Jacob in my arms like I had been made for it.

“He likes you.” Chloe leaned back on the couch in the camper Jimmy had set her up with. It was parked on the infield, so that he could have quick access to her, but far enough away from everyone else, so that the baby wouldn’t be bothered. They had custom ordered headphones for the baby and it was so interesting to see the child wearing them and not being fazed by the cars running laps around us.

“I like him.” I held my hand out to where the baby reached and grabbed ahold on my index finger. He cooed in my arms and the door to the camper opened and Law and Jimmy entered as quietly as possible.
