“I am. Because it means it brought you here. It brought me to this very moment of getting to see you walk down the aisle to your future husband. Something I never thought I’d see so soon.”
Leah giggled beside me.
“What’s so funny?” my mother asked her.
“Is he still that in your phone?” Leah turned to ask me the question.
I put my hands over my face and let out a laugh I didn’t know if I would ever be able to stop.
“What’s so funny?” Cary asked this time.
I finally stopped laughing for five seconds in order to answer.
“The first day I ever met Law, when he put his phone number in my phone, he labeled himself as future husband and I never even bothered to change it after that day.”
My mother and Cary joined us into laughter after my admission.
“My son.” Cary shook her head, but I knew that look in her eyes was pride. Law knew exactly what he had wanted that day and he had gone for it. And I was the luckiest woman alive that he had decided to do so.
“Let’s get you to your future husband then.” My mother leaned in and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek and ushered me out the door. It wasn’t until we got to the car that they put the blindfold on me and drove us off into the distance.
The car ride there was a short one and when we pulled onto a dirt road my heart felt at home knowing we were going to be doing this on a farm. It was somewhere I had become so familiar with, with being here in Alabama.
The car stopped after a few twists and turns. I heard the door open to my left and Leah’s hand grabbed for mine. She was the only one who had gotten into the back with me and now she was leading me out onto a field of some kind. The breeze of the mid-day blew by us and a shiver ran up my spine. I wasn’t ready for this, but yet it felt like I had been made for this day.
“Now.” Leah started to talk to us. “Both of you are blindfolded. You both can choose when to take them off, but we are going to get back in the car and drive back toward the venue. You are both literally a one-minute walk away.”
“Got it,” Law said and I felt my legs wobble. He was here. He was so close, yet so far away. My fingers itched to reach for the piece of fabric covering my eyes.
I heard Leah walk back to the car and then drive away. Then Law and I were left alone.
“Sugar.” The word coming from Law was my undoing.
“On the count of five,” I stated and he started the countdown.
“One.” I placed both of my hands on the bottom of the blindfold.
“Two.” I took a deep breath.
“Three.” I exhaled.
“Four.” I closed my eyes.
“Five.” I ripped the cloth from in front of my eyes and opened them to see Law standing in front of me in a black tuxedo. My hands went immediately to my mouth to cover the gasp that escaped me. I looked around to see us standing in a field of sunflowers.
They were everywhere. Tall, short, bright yellow, light yellow. You name it, they were there. Law was standing there watching me. His eyes were misty and I was happy to only be standing about five feet away from him. I watched his expression unfold as his eyes roamed my body, catching every detail of the dress I had on. His eyes fell to the valley of my breast and then down to my legs. I did a small turn for him to see the back and a small gasp escaped him, but unlike mine, he didn’t try to hide his.
I turned back to standing right in front of him. I had lowered my hand to my sides and we stood there in silence, taking in the moment that was ours and ours only. Words wouldn’t form in my head and I didn’t know how Law had even gotten out his next two words, but when he said them I knew how. Because he was in just as much shock as I was.
“I’m speechless.”
