“Forever.”
His words rang out loudly in the quiet garage. They were a statement, not a question.
“I have a feeling the pull he felt is long gone.” One of the guys from the back room made a comment and I couldn’t help but chuckle. From the way Law looked when he got out of the race car, I’m thinking it was all in his head too.
“Shut it, Jeremy.” Law moved a hand from me and snapped his fingers at the guy, but he never took his gaze off me. “Are you being serious, forever?”
I scrunched my eyebrows together.
“Where else would I want to be, Law?” I could hear whispers from behind me when I said Law’s nickname. Every person here had been using his full name, but not me.
“What about ballet and New York?”
“But what about you and us and your racing?” I countered him. I wanted him to know this was real. That I wanted this to not just be about me and him as a separate entity. That his passion and dreams were now mine too.
“So, this is real, I’m not imagining things?”
I placed a hand on Law’s cheek and lifted up on my toes to give him a light kiss. “If you are, then so am I.”
Law’s lips crashed to mine again.
A chuckle came from behind us moments later and Tony finally spoke up. “I think you should run the laps again.”
I broke from Law’s embrace to see Tony holding out Law’s helmet to him. Law grabbed for it and kissed my forehead before placing the helmet on and jumping back into the car.
“This one’s for you, sugar!” he yelled at me before starting his engine and pulling out of the garage. I turned toward the television where the rest of his crew was watching as Law pulled out onto the track.
“The first lap will be a warmup and then he will pull out four fast laps and then a cooldown.” The guy Law had called Jeremy popped up beside me. “Jeremy Cline, Lawson’s new teammate.”
He held out a hand for me to shake, but I kept my arms crossed around my chest.
“You know better than that, boy.” Tony came up behind him and smacked him across the head. “Don’t mind the rookie.”
I laughed and watched as Law’s speed gained. Everyone on the team was facing the television, watching as Law went around and around each turn, getting faster with each lap. When he pulled into the fourth lap, Tony pulled out a stopwatch and manually timed him. I snuck a glance to the side, trying to see how fast Law would complete his lap. I didn’t know what was a good lap or not, but Law went back over the finish line at 47.67 seconds.
“Holy fuck.” Jeremy was also looking over Tony’s shoulder.
“Darlin’.” Tony looked over at me and then back at the stopwatch. “You can come around here any time.”
I blushed at his comment. “Why do you say that?”
“Because that was Lawson’s fastest ever recorded lap.” Tony moved past me and over to where Law was pulling back into the garage. “I guess the pull is gone?”
“Fuck yeah, it is!” Law yelled as he jumped out of the car, throwing his helmet off once again, but this time he ran toward me, scooped me up, and started to walk out of the garage.
“Lawson! We have to go over this!” Tony yelled behind us.
I looked up at Law, where he held me against his chest. His eyes put me in a trance I never wanted to break out of. Watching him drive and knowing that because I was here he was more focused had me reeling.
“We’ll go over it tomorrow on the bus!” Law yelled back and carried me into the main offices. “Sara, can you grab Anya’s bags out of Tony’s office?”
Law didn’t wait for Sara to answer him before he brought me outside to a large black matte pickup truck. He opened the passenger door that was left unlocked and deposited me in the seat. I watched as Sara brought out the two bags I had and Law tossed them into the back seats behind me before closing my door and getting into the driver seat. He flipped down the visor and grabbed the keys, which were lodged in the crease, and started the engine.
We were pulling out of the parking lot before Tony had a chance to burst open through the front doors. We pulled away from Law’s screaming manager and headed down the unknown road that had led me right to Law.
“Where are we going?” I grabbed for Law’s hand that wasn’t on the steering wheel and pulled it into my lap. My fingers traced over the calluses on his palms and fingertips. I loved seeing him like this, rough and in his element.
“Home.” Was his answer.
I didn’t need to say anything as we drove toward an unknown location to me. I trusted Law and wherever he took me, I knew it was going to be our forever.
