“I thought when you saw...” he began.
“That I’d run?” Holly shook her head. “I’m done running.”
A shiver ran through her that had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with the cold seeping through her boots. Daniel noticed immediately, his arm wrapping around her shoulders.
“You’re freezing,” he said, glancing at the darkening sky. “Let’s get out of the cold.”
Holly nodded, suddenly aware of the snow coming heavier now. She took his hand, their fingers intertwining naturally as she led him toward her car.
“My car has better heating,” she explained, fumbling with the keys. Her hands trembled, not from fear but from the overwhelming certainty filling her chest. This was right. He was right.
The engine sparked to life, and Holly cranked the heater to full blast. Warm air flowed through the vents as Daniel settled into the passenger seat beside her. The small space immediately felt intimate, filled with his presence, his scent, and the undeniable energy between them.
“So this is my car,” Holly said, a smile tugging at her lips as she remembered that first night, stranded in the snow. “Except this time, I’m not lost.”
“No,” Daniel agreed, reaching across to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. “You’re found.”
His touch lingered, fingers trailing along her cheek, down to her jaw. Holly leaned into his palm, her eyes never leaving his. The space between them seemed to shrink, the car growing warmer by the second.
“When did you know?” she whispered.
“Before we met,” Daniel murmured. “I sensed you before I saw you, and I knew immediately. You’re my mate, Holly.”
“Mate,” she repeated, testing the word on her tongue. It sounded right, felt right in a way that ‘fiancé’ or ‘boyfriend’ never had.
“It’s why everything between us felt so…”
“Inevitable,” Holly finished for him. She leaned closer, no longer able to bear even that small distance between them.
Daniel’s hand slid to the back of her neck, drawing her toward him. Their lips met in a kiss that started gently but quickly deepened, carrying all the longing and desire that had built between them. Holly sighed against his mouth, her hands finding their way to his chest, feeling the solid heartbeat beneath his coat.
“We should move to the back,” she whispered against his lips. “More room.”
Daniel nodded, his eyes darkening with desire. They broke apart reluctantly, both breathless as they climbed awkwardly over the center console into the back seat. Holly caught her sleeve on the gearshift, and Daniel bumped his head on the roof, which sent them both into fits of laughter.
“Very graceful,” Holly giggled, tugging him down beside her.
“Bears are known for their elegance,” Daniel replied with a grin before capturing her lips again.
Holly reached behind her, fumbling for the blanket she kept on the back shelf. She pulled it free, draping it over them as Daniel’s hands found their way beneath her sweater. His fingers were warm against her skin, tracing patterns up her sides that made her shiver with anticipation.
“Is this okay?” he asked, pausing at the edge of her bra.
“More than okay,” Holly breathed, arching into his touch.
His hands moved higher, cupping her breasts through the thin fabric of her bra. Holly gasped as his thumbs brushed overher nipples, sending sparks of pleasure down her spine. She wanted more, wanted his skin against hers, wanted to feel all of him.
Sitting up, she slipped off her coat and then tugged at the hem of her sweater, struggling to pull it over her head in the confined space. Daniel helped, his fingers brushing against her exposed skin. The cold air hit her for just a moment before his hands were there again, warming her.
“You’re beautiful,” he whispered, his eyes taking in every inch of her.
Holly reached for him, fumbling with the buttons of his shirt. “Your turn.”
Together they undressed each other, laughing softly at the awkwardness of it, at elbows knocking against windows and knees bumping the back of the front seats. But beneath the laughter was a current of desire that grew stronger with each piece of clothing removed.
When they were finally naked, Daniel pulled the blanket over them, creating a cocoon of warmth against the winter chill beyond the windows. Holly’s hands explored his chest, tracing the contours of muscle, the surprising softness of the hair that grew there.
Daniel lowered his head, pressing kisses along her collarbone, down to the swell of her breast. His tongue circled her nipple before drawing it into his mouth, and Holly gasped, her back arching off the seat. Her fingers tangled in his hair, holding him to her as pleasure coursed through her body.
