I felt him shake his head. “No, you wouldn’t. But I’m glad I could help you even a fraction.”
“I will see you in a few hours,” he pressed a kiss to my mouth. “All you have to do is stay alive until then.”
I trembled, and he raised himself until he was leaning over me, his expression intent.
“I swear to you,” he stared into my eyes, “no matter what happens, even if you lose your memory every single day, even if you’re powerless for the rest of your life, even if it takes me the rest ofmylife, I will never stop fighting for you.”
I attempted a smile, but I’d prepared for this. Deep down, I’d known.
He wasn’t going to make it in time. Wasn’t going to be here before the peak of the meteor shower. Taraghlan had cost him time. Time we’d needed.
I leaned up and brushed my lips over Samael’s. Soaked in the scent of him, the feel of him.
“I love you,” I told him.

DANICA
My bedroom door burst open, and I sat up, heart racing. Lucifer stalked into my bedroom, his face a mask of rage.
Oh fuck.
I leapt out of my bed, backing toward the window, but I knew damn well there was no escape out there.
“Did you think I wouldn’t know?” Lucifer hissed as he advanced on me.
“Know what?”
“No one would dare free those slaves. No one butyou.”
Worth it. It had been worth it, even if he killed me right now.
“I don’t know what you’re—”
“Silence! You worked with the black witch. How you must have laughed when I killed her.”
I mean, he wasn’twrong.
The expression on his face was chilling. I didn’t regret what I’d done—thousands of lives had been saved, their misery ended. But from the look on Lucifer’s face, he was counting down the moments until he could end me.
Lucifer gestured at Daimonion, who sauntered toward me, grabbing my arm.
“Follow me,” Lucifer ordered.
Daimonion pulled me out of the room after him. “You’ll die too,” I hissed at him.
“Strangely, I’m not scared of a halfbreed with no powers.”
“I’mnot the one you should be afraid of.” Vas would kill him one day. The only question was how much damage the assassin would do before that day?
“If I were you, I would be focused on the pain and suffering you’re soon to experience,” Daimonion told me. And from the twisted look on his face, he was wishing he could be the one to hand me that pain and suffering.
They dragged me down to the dungeon, to the cell across from Kyla’s. I didn’t want to know what they’d done with the creature who’d been in here previously, but I had a feeling it wasn’t good.
Daimonion threw me into the cage. I landed on hard stone and my knees barked with pain.
Kyla rammed her body against the bars of her cage again and again, howling her vengeance. I mentally begged her to shut the fuck up. The last thing I wanted was for her to attract Lucifer’s attention.
