But he wouldn’t enjoy what happened when she finally remembered who she was.

“Tell me then,” she eyed me. At least she was curious.

I smiled. But my hands were shaking with the effort it took not to touch her. “Well, witchling, the first thing you should know is that our love? It is the stuff oflegends.”

Istared at the demon who wanted me to believe we were in love. He stepped closer, and his hand shook slightly as he raised it to my face. He closed his eyes as his hand cupped my cheek, and then they opened once more, blazing with fury and… determination.

Ihadseen that expression before. I knew I had.

“Will you sit with me?” He dropped his hand and gestured to two armchairs that had appeared out of nowhere, even as the mist continued to envelop us.

I nodded and curled up in the chair, gesturing for him to talk.

His silver eyes watched me as if it was impossible for him to look away, as if he would never want to look at anything else ever again. Whoever had come up with this tactic wasgood. I’d always wanted someone to look at me that way.

“Our story is unconventional,” he finally said, and the hint of a smile played around his mouth. I suddenly wanted to see what he would look like if he gave into that smile. Would his eyes crinkle around the corners? Did he have a dimple?

“Unconventional how?”

“You stole something from me. I didn’t know it was you at first. When we met, it was because you had come into my territory uninvited.”

“That doesn’t sound like me.”

“Believe me, it is. You have a tendency to do what you want and deal with the consequences later. It was one of the things that first attracted me to you. I couldn’t understand how a human with so much to lose could be so determined to find her answers that she would risk my wrath.”

“Your wrath?”

His eyes glittered as he swept his gaze over my body. “Few would dare to sneak into my tower. Even fewer would risk interrogating a demon in territory I had declared neutral.”

I cast him a disappointed look. “Now I know you’re telling me an untruth. I would never—”

Those silver eyes burned into me. “This ismystory time, witchling.”

“Why do you call me that? I’m not a witch.”

“You’re wrong about that too, but we’ll get to that later. For now, it’s time I remind you of how handsome you found me. How you wanted nothing more than to roll me beneath you and ride me like a—”

My cheeks burned. “Now I know you’re lying.”

I wasn’t pure, but I was inexperienced. Grandfather was a traditionalist, and he’d risk no bastards eventually having any claim to his throne.

He sent me a look so heated, my heart fluttered. “Not lying, little witch. Unfortunately for both of us, you were terrified, and I was enraged. A demon was killed in my territory, and I decided you were to blame.”

“That doesn’t—”

“Sound like you. I know. Someone had been killing my demons, and I tasked you with discovering who.”

“Why would I do that?”

“The other option was death.”

“You threatened to kill me? And you want me to believe we were… lovers?”

Was that a wince? The demon cleared his throat, looking almost… awkward. “I didn’t know what you would become to me, of course. Although, subconsciously, I must have known you were mine. Because I bonded you to me in a way I shouldn’t have. And yes, little witch. Wearelovers.”
