Not only did I owe it to Ag to kill Daimonion, but Mere wouldn’t be safe until he was gone. I turned and stalked out of the room.

MEREDITH
Iknew Vas was gone before I even opened my eyes. I ignored the pang that shot through my heart and sat up, running my hands through my hair.
Last night was…
Incredible.
When I was with Vas, I felt whole.
And that was a dangerous thought.
I forced myself to get out of bed, spotting a note on my table.
Dream of me. Vas.
I was pretty sure I had.
I grabbed my first cup of coffee, and turned on the shower, washing up quickly as I shivered through it. I really needed to call that plumber.
When I was done, I checked my phone, finding a message from Kyla.
Gary got the vishiweed. We’re on our way to yours.
I threw on leggings and a T-shirt, and by the time I’d dried my hair, Evie and Kyla were knocking on the door downstairs.
I led them up to my apartment, where I’d already gathered everything else we needed for the spell on my coffee table.
Kyla stepped into the apartment and sent me a shit-eating grin. Mortification made my face hot. I should’ve known the werewolf would scent it.
“Am I missing something?” Evie asked.
I opened my mouth, but Kyla was still grinning. “Mere spent the night slinging kitty.”
Evie’s eyes lit up. “Vas?”
“No. Some random customer. Of course, it was Vas. Because I have zero self-control.”
Kyla snorted. “I mean, no one can blame you for that. He’s hot as hell. Theoretically, of course,” she said quickly when I stared at her. “Even if I were the type to break the girl code—which,ew—he’s been obsessed with you since he laid eyes on you. About time you tapped that.”
“Good to see I have your approval.” I glanced at Evie.
She just smiled. “Better not break his heart, or Danica will be pissed.”
I rolled my eyes. “I’m the only one at risk of heartbreak.” The fact that Vas had left at some point at the crack of dawn made me feel a little…insecure. Maybe it hadn’t been as earth-shattering for him as it had for me. Time for a change of subject. “You find anything at Patrick’s?”
Evie scowled. “Albert must have gotten in there before us. Not a laptop or phone or anything to be found. No notes about his cases either. His house had been completely cleaned out.”
“Fucking Albert.” Kyla cracked her knuckles.
“In that case, let’s get to work.”
Evie gave me a knowing look but nodded. While the spell called for oak bark, Evie wanted to use raspberry leaf instead. And while the spell also instructed us to light four white candles, she’d waved her hand and called that “theatrics.”
When it came to spell work, I’d never seen anyone with better instincts than Evie. I agreed to the changes, and we sat in my small living room.
