“What the fuck, Vas?”
“Someone smashed up your bar.”
“It’s fine.”
“Don’t fucking lie to me.” He stood in front of me before I could blink, and I gaped at him. Vas was so charming, so laid-back, it was easy to forget just how dangerous he was.
“Okay, it’s not fine. But it’s still none of your business.”
“That’s where you’re wrong, baby.”
“Don’t call me baby.”
“I had a vision of you. Dead.”
I stared at him. He shoved a hand through his hair, and invisible wings rustled as he turned, stalking away.
“Dead?” I was proud that my voice didn’t tremble as I said the word. But my mouth had gone dry. I stumbled toward the bar and poured a glass of water.
“Drink?”
He shook his head. “You know my powers. Most people do,” he said. “But…I could never access them. Well, other than the secret thing.”
I glanced away. We sure as shit weren’t going to talk about that.
“Visions?”
“Yeah. I had one on the plane. On the way here. You were dead. On some dark street.”
“Not how I’d planned to go.”
“Don’t be cute.”
I winked at him. “That’s like asking the sun not to shine, Vas.”
He stared at me, clearly unimpressed.
I sighed. “I’m sorry. I just…don’t know how to deal with that.”
“You don’t need to. I’m sticking to you like glue. If you want me out of here, I’ll sleep on the pavement outside.”
He’d do it too, the stubborn demon.
I didn’t want to end up dead. If Vas was willing to stick around until I dealt with Nero, I’d take his protection.
I gave him squinty eyes. “This conversation would have gone better if you hadn’t been such a high-handed dickhead.”
He showed me his teeth. “I’m a demon.”
I sighed. There was no getting rid of Vas now. My lady parts loved this. My brain, not so much.
I swiped the gun from the table. “Follow me.”
Vas fell into step behind me, panther-quiet as he stalked up the stairs. He unerringly managed to skip the steps that creaked.
He paused in front of my apartment door and gave me an approving look. “That’s a serious ward. I’m not sure even I could break it.”
“Danica helped me in exchange for something I did for her.”
