I shuddered. “I knew he was going to kill me. I just wanted to hurt him a little.”

“You ran, and you got help,” Kyla said. “It was smart.”

“I never want to be in that situation again. I need to start working out.”

Evie grinned at me. “I’ve started training with the demons. Edward insisted. You’re welcome to join, just as soon as Vas lets you out of bed.”

“Count me in.”

“I can’t believe Daimonion’s finally dead,” Danica said. She crossed her legs, shoving her hair off her face. “I’m glad Vas has that closure.”

“Me too.”

“And what about you, Mere? What’s your plan?”

She kept her expression carefully neutral, and my eyes met hers. I knew what she was asking.

“I’m bonding with Vas. He’ll lose half his life-span, and I’m sorry for it. But—”

“Good,” Danica said, getting to her feet. “I was worried I was going to have to bring out the big guns.”

I blinked. “You’re not mad?”

“Mad that two of my best friends get to spend their lives together? Please. Besides, Vas’s parents were überpowerful. His life-span is likely longer than he thinks it is. And even if it’s not, there’s more to life than just being alive.”

“Now that’s deep,” Kyla said dryly, and Evie laughed.

Danica shot them both a look. “I need to get back,” she said. “I just wanted to check on you. Make sure you’re okay.”

“Thanks. I’ll come visit soon.”

“You better.” She strolled out, and I glanced at Evie.

“What’s your plan now?”

She stretched out her legs, leaning back on a pile of pillows. “Nelson got the job he wanted. The task force is officially getting created. And he offered us a retainer. He wants us to consult on paranormal cases.”

Kyla sent me an amused look. “He offeredEviea retainer. I’m not quite trustworthy enough.”

Evie grinned. “He thinks you have poor impulse control.”

“I have no idea why he would think that.”

I stared at the wolf, picturing the look on Nelson’s face when she’d snarled at him, and then the shock in his eyes when she peed on the unseelie king’s shoes.

“It’s a mystery, that’s for sure.”

“I’ll be hitting you up for some planning time in the next few weeks,” Evie told me. “It’s almost time for operation steal-a-sword.”

Kyla wrinkled her nose. “That name sucks.”

“It’s a work in progress.”

“You guys really think you can steal the most powerful sword in all the realms… twice? From two fae kings?”

Evie smirked. “Not only are we going to steal it…”

“We’re going to look damn good doing it,” Kyla finished with a smirk of her own.
