Evie let out a low sound of displeasure, and Kyla echoed her, only her growl was much scarier. I glanced at them. Evie was wearing a mint-colored sundress and white sandals, her curly hair in a high ponytail. She looked like she was about to meet friends for brunch.

Kyla was in wolf form, her fur startlingly white, her paws the size of my face. Her icy-blue eyes met mine, and I nodded at her. She nodded back.

Neither of them was moving.

“What’s the problem?” I asked.

“The problem is, I know those cops. Nereus’s orders state that all of his investigators are to be given access to all evidence, but that doesn’t mean they won’t fuck with us.”

And if Evie went to Nereus, she’d look like an unprofessional narc.

“What are you going to do?”

She shrugged. “I guess I’m going to do some sweet-talking.”

Kyla let out another rumbling growl, and Evie smirked at her. “No, you can’t eat them.”

I didn’t think Kyla would really eat them, but there was no doubt she’d come back from the underworld different, so maybe it was a good thing Evie was establishing the no-eating thing now.

Kyla’s mouth opened in a wolfy grin, and we all watched as two of the cops broke away and walked toward us.

“Evie Amana.”

“Detective Nelson. Detective Roberts. This is Kyla and Meredith.”

Roberts sneered back at her, and Nelson sent him a look.

Nelson’s green eyes sharpened as he took us in, lingering on the werewolf. I couldn’t blame him. It wasn’t often that humans saw them in wolf form, and Kyla was magnificent.

She was also huge. And she showcased her size in a ripple of muscles as she stretched, her mouth falling open again as she displayed long white teeth.

Evie sent her a look, and I stifled a grin. Meanwhile, Nelson had tensed, and Roberts looked like he was close to pissing himself.

“Nereus hired you,” Nelson said.

Surprise flashed across Evie’s face, and she nodded. “We’d like to examine the scene. If you’re finished with it. Please.”

He smiled at her. “You once told me I didn’t need to kiss your asses to be invited to share your toys.”

She grinned back. “And you politely requested that we allow you into the crime scene before we removed evidence.”

“I want a favor.”

Evie’s grin turned into a scowl. Next to Nelson, Roberts smirked. He still hadn’t taken his eyes off Kyla, who was ignoring him. It was a good thing she was chill, because plenty of werewolves would take his staring as a challenge.

“What kind of favor?”

“To be determined.”

Evie’s eyes narrowed. “You’re supposed to cooperate with us.”

His expression hardened. “And I will. But I can cooperate gladly, or I can slow things down and only cooperate when ordered to by my superiors.”

“Seems like that goes against the spirit of cooperation,” I said mildly, and the ghost of a smile crossed Nelson’s face.

“How about this. I’ll give you access to the scene, along with the crime scene photos, in exchange for asmallfavor at a later time.”

Evie sighed. “Deal.”
