Vas merely shifted his gaze behind me, and the Tesla ducked out of the line and took off.

Demons.

He opened the passenger door. I’d thought he’d just stick his head inside, but he folded his entire body into the cramped space. One of his wings whacked me in the cheek and I scowled at him.

He raised one eyebrow. “Hey, you think this is comfortable for me?”

“What are you doing in my car?”

“Thought you were going home, partner. This isn’t the way to your apartment. Also, I liked the dick thing. Your sister is scary, you know that right?”

I sighed. Of course, he’d seen that. I drove through the intersection as the light turned green once more.

“You remember that woman who was outside the tower before Ramiel attacked me?”

His expression turned somber, and he nodded. “You said she was a friend of your mom’s.”

“Yeah. She’s been out of town ever since, and now she’s finally back. She said she’s got some information for me.”

I turned onto Lakewood Ave, feeling Vas’ eyes on me.

“What?”

“I thought you didn’t care who your father was.”

“I didn’t. Then I learned I was a demon.” I scowled. No surprise on his face. “Samael told you.”

He nodded. “So now you want to know who he was?”

“I’m a freak, Vas. Demons don’t have babies with human women. Or witches.”

He sent me a slow smile. “Times are a-changing, Dani.”

“Don’t call me Dani. There was no dating app for paranormals in my mom’s day. Whoever my father was, he got her knocked up and left her with the responsibility of raising a half-demon, half-witch kid.”

I pulled up outside Harriette’s stately home. At the sight of the white stucco walls, my memories began to trickle into my mind, piling on top of each other. I remembered walking up this path right after mom had taken me from my sister. She hadn’t trusted me alone in the car in my distraught, defiant mood.

“Do you want me to come with you?”

I shrugged. “I don’t mind. Just… please don’t tell anyone what we talk about.”

“I won’t.”

Harriette opened the door as soon as I knocked.

“Danica. What a surprise. And this is?”

“This is my friend Vas.”

Harriette had a strange fear of demons, given that she must’ve come into contact with them numerous times over her long life. She gave Vas a tight smile and he nodded gravely back at her.

“You mentioned that you had some information for me.”

“I did. But listen, I just got into town–”

“I know what I am.”

She froze. “How?”
