To his credit, he kept his promise. He dropped a kiss onto the tip of my nose, molded his body to mine, and closed his eyes.
“Goodnight, witchling.”
I didn’t know what to do with that. I closed my eyes and dreamed that my power tore me apart.

“I’m serious Samael. Take me home or I’ll get a Lyft.” I could always ask Vas to take me, but threatening Samael with that didn’t seem like a good idea.
The demon let out a low growl. If he’d made that sound when I first met him, I probably would’ve had a heart attack.
I’d woken up tangled in his arms, the long length of him nestled right up against where I needed him the most.
He’d already been awake, his face carved out of stone as he stayed very still.
He’d promised not to touch me, and I’d been grinding up against him in my sleep. Mortification swept through me and I hurriedly untangled myself and stalked into his closet, where I found a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt that came down to my knees. I rolled the sweatpants up until I could walk in them without falling on my face.
Then I’d made my way into the bathroom, gathered my weapons, and strapped them on.
Now, the demon was stubbornly glaring at me, wearing nothing but a pair of sweatpants that I’d thrown at him.
“We need to talk about your living situation.”
“Now is not the time.” It would never be the time. This was the problem. Give the demon an inch, and he attempted to take a hundred miles. “Forget it, I’ll take the elevator.”
I turned and Samael cursed. In the blink of an eye he’d pulled me onto the balcony, where he launched into the air and silently flew me home.
The silent treatment. Great.
I studied his face, but his eyes were fixed on the distance, his expression remote… almost cruel. Then he looked at me and his face softened for a split second— so fast I almost missed it— before he shifted his gaze away.
We dropped into my parking lot.
Samael watched me walk toward my car, his eyes dark.
I unlocked it.
“Bounty hunter.”
There was a chasm between us that we could never quite cross. I turned toward him. “You know what? You–”
The world exploded.
Heat seared me and I flew through the air. I had a single moment to recognize that this was going to hurt, and then I slammed into an SUV. I hit it with my face and crumpled to the ground.
Samael was suddenly next to me, face twisted into a vicious snarl. I flinched away from him but his hands were exceedingly gentle.
“Stay still, witchling. I need to check you for injuries.”
Vas appeared next to us. “The healer is on his way.”
“I’m okay.”
He ignored that. I blinked, and I was suddenly surrounded by demons. Had I passed out? Samael’s brow was creased in concentration as he gently ran his hands over every inch of my body and Vas looked worried as he held his phone up to his ear. I glanced behind them where Bael stood next to my burning car. The demon lifted a hand and the flames went out with a whoosh.
“Whoa.”
