BLAIR: Joking (smiley face)
The dots disappear before I get his one-word response.
ZANE: Tease
Dammit. That’s not what he was going to send, and now I’m desperate to know what it was.
ZANE: What would you do if I did turn up now?
Wrap my arms around you and never let go.Jesus Christ. Where did that come from?
BLAIR: I’d send you to bunk with Cade
ZANE: Cade?
BLAIR: He’s visiting. You two are so alike it’s scary. He also thinks it’s appropriate to turn up out of the blue
ZANE: You can’t see me but I’m laughing. I bet Nathan loved that
I may not be able to see him, but I can certainly picture the way his lips are undoubtedly curling, while his eyes sparkle with glee. And I both love and hate that it doesn’t take much to conjure his image to my mind.
Snapping myself out of it, I take a deep breath and reply.
BLAIR: He’s at practice. But he’ll be fine
At some point I’ll probably have to tell Zane we’ve broken up. But for now, it’s easier to keep him in the dark. For both our sakes.
CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
Zane
Sinking back into my plush lounge chair, I smile reading Blair’s response. I bet Nathanwon’tbe fine, and I wish I was a fly on the wall when he finds out. My belly shakes from chuckling, and while I probably shouldn’t be happy about someone else’s misfortune, in Nathan’s case, I don’t mind. Maybe Cade’s presence will be the kick in the ass he needs to be a better boyfriend.
But then again…maybe it won’t. Once a douche, always a douche.
Still smiling, I begin typing a response to Blair.
ZANE: Poor Nathan. He
Before I can finish responding, a message comes through from Cade, drawing my attention, and when I read the text, I freeze.
CADE: Blair and the dickwad broke up. I just helped her move out
The fuck?I flick back to Blair’s message exchange and re-read her last text slowly.
B: He’s at practice. But he’ll be fine
No hint of a breakup there.
What are you playing at, B?
Ignoring Cade, I delete my half-typed message and change my response, my fingers pressing the letters much harder than I need to.
ZANE: Maybe Iwillpay you another visit
Pressing send, I curse and toss my phone across the room, watching it bounce against the cushions of my armchair, falling to the floor with a thud.
They broke up?Blair’s single. And she’s moved out of the douche’s house. I should be happy about that. But now…it’s going to be so much harder to stay away, and I’m not sure she wants me around. In fact, Iknowshe doesn’t.
