Nope.
“See, you don’t even have anything to say to that because you know it’s true.”
He growled low in his throat, let his foot off the gas, and pulled the vehicle off the two-lane road.
She’d gone and done it now. Here they were, not a house in sight, nor a car or, hell, even light for that matter. Even the moon knew this guy’s mood and hid behind the clouds.
He wrenched open his door and slid out of the truck, amazing since who the hell is really big enough to slide out of a truck? She either climbed down or fell out.
Her heart leapt in her throat at the menacing look in his eyes, illuminated by the glow of the headlights as he made his way around the hood and to the back seat.
Her side.
This was where she was going to die.
Not in a clown motel. Not at the Starlight.
Maddox was going to stop her heart right here, in the middle of nowhere.
He yanked open her door and leaned in, his hands on his jean-clad hips. “I thought you were a lady.”
Skyler pulled his feet away from her and curled up in a ball.
And snored.
Fast asleep and no help. Not that she’d hide behind a kid, but still.
“Iama lady,” she said, glaring at him.
“You’re a smart-mouthed troublemaker.”
She turned to him, resting her feet on the edge of the doorframe, and jabbed a finger at him. “I most certainly—”
“And ungrateful.”
“Now, wait a minute. You strut around, flaunting your wares…”
He reared back. “I don’t flaunt my muscles.”
“You—”
“Shut up.”
Her mouth snapped shut, proving that her body had taken over her brain and had gone into survival mode.
“I don’t parade them, either.” He pointed at her and leaned in. “And you know what, lady? When the hornet’s nest you stirred comes for you you’ll be happy I have them, because whether it’s carrying your sweet ass out of danger or hand to hand combat with a criminal, you’ll be alive in the end. So, you’re welcome.”
“I didn’t thank you,” she said. She straightened her back and lifted her chin. For some reason, she couldn’t let him have the last word.
He clucked his tongue and shook his head. The corners of his mouth turned up, not quite in a smile, but he was up to something.
She slid back.
“Oh, no you don’t.” He hooked his hands around the backs of her knees and yanked her forward onto the edge of the seat.
Before she could so much as make a peep, he’d nestled between her thighs. Her skirt bunching up around her thighs with the force of it, he buried his hands in her hair and crushed his lips against hers.
And he did just what she thought he would… stopped her heart.
