"What?"Annie shot to her feet, her heart dropping into her stomach."What do you mean, Leigh took off? She's in the bedroom."
But Hunter never answered. He hadn't heard her.He wasn't aware of what Baker had shouted.
She grabbed his hands, forcing him to look at her."Baker said Leigh's gone."
Hunter stood, dropping the ball for the dog, and grabbed her hand, taking her to Baker.
If Leigh were gone, where would she go?
The despair shattered into panic.Deep in her heart, she knew where her sister would go.
Hearing that Hunter was going after Jason had pushed Leigh to protect him.She had a feeling her sister wouldn't let anyone else become Jason's victim.
Her sister was trying to stop it all so that Annie could have Hunter in her life.
Chapter 29
"I'm going with you."Annie bounced on her toes, ready to run.
Hunter shook his head, already reaching for his helmet."No."
She stepped closer, her eyes blazing and pointing at her mouth."If she's...Jason.She'll...to me.You can't...She won't..."
Hunter clenched his jaw without taking his gaze off Annie's mouth, but the more scared she became, the harder it was for him to read her lips.Because he couldn't hear her tone, hear the panic, hear the urgency, all he could see was the way the tears refused to fall, and she kept looking around as if Leigh was going to walk into the clubhouse at any moment.
"You'll stay here."He didn't want her anywhere near Jason.
"Hunter."She grabbed his vest and got in his face."She's my sister."
They went back and forth, neither one of them was willing to bend. The more he argued, the less he understood where the conversation was going. Finally, Hunter exhaled hard, the fight draining from him.
He hooked her neck, bringing her closer."You'll stay with me the whole time."
She nodded insistently.
He kissed her hard, then handed her a helmet. They needed to get out of here and find Leigh before she got to Jason. He hoped the fact that she left on foot, slipping out of the gate, before anyone could catch her, meant he'd arrive at Jason's house before her.
