Chapter 26
Asoft knock interruptedRoma folding clothes. She glanced at Leigh. Most people barged into Hunter's room, expecting him to be inside and unable to hear the knock.
She crossed the room and opened the door.
Roma leaned against the frame, her hair pulled back, keys jingling in her hand."I'm heading to the store, and Hunter wanted me to stop by and see if you need anything?Snacks, shampoo, tampons, whatever. He's paying."
Annie glanced at Leigh, then shook her head."We're okay. You and everyone else have been so nice to give us clothes, food, and let us stay with Hunter."
Roma's gaze traveled past her to Leigh and back again before waving off the thanks with a flick of her wrist."Honestly, it's nice having other women around here.I haven't had much time to visit with you, but still—it feels good."Her smile softened."I love Hunter. He's one of my favorite people."
Curiosity tugged at Annie."How long have you known him?"
Roma raised her eyebrows."Forever.I grew up here.I was little when Hunter showed up at the clubhouse—four, maybe five years old."She laughed, her tone quick and warm."Funny thing is, nobody knew he was deaf at first.Everyone thought he was mute because he didn't talk for years. Then one day, out of nowhere, he shouted at everyone to shut the fuck up and slow down when they speak. You should've seen all the guys' faces."
Annie smiled despite herself, picturing the scene.
"They figured it out after that," Roma continued, amusement lingering in her tone."He's so damn good at reading lips, he fooled half the club.Men are clueless sometimes.Anyone paying attention could tell he needed to read lips to follow along."
"He is good at it," she agreed quietly.
Roma pushed off the doorframe, her laughter fading into a softer smile."Anyway, I'll see you later.I need to go and get back before Kodiak's done in the garage."She lifted her hand in a casual wave before disappearing down the hall.
The room settled into silence again.Leigh stretched out on the sofa."She's so young to be with Kodiak, don't you think?"
"Mm."Annie didn't answer.
Age had nothing to do with closeness.Annie was twenty years younger than Hunter. Some bonds were forged in ways that time couldn't explain.
