“I watch quiz shows. Pointless shit like that comes up all the time.”

“I look forward to hearing more pointless trivia.”

“Are you ready?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Then I’ll begin.” I clear my throat and start to read.

CHAPTER9

HARU

Hayley

Have you found a new job yet?

No. You?

No. I was hoping to break into something more upmarket than designing clothes for supermarkets, but no luck.

Sorry.

Yeah, same.

We’ll find something soon. I’m sure of it.

Hey, look at me. I’m taking a leaf out of Kyle’s glass-half-full book. He’d be proud of me. Wouldn’t he? I debate texting him my achievement but decide against it. It would be super needy, and he’s at work.

Fingers crossed. Do you want to meet up for a drink?

Can’t. I gave up my flat and moved in with my parents in Leeds. It’s only temporary until I find a new job.

Smart move. I wish I had that option. I’ve snagged a waitressing job to make ends meet.

I ache with sadness for her.

I’ll let you know when I’m back in London for an interview. Can we meet then?

That would be great. Hopefully, it won’t be long before you get called for an interview. You’re a great designer, Haru. Any company would be lucky to have you.

Right back at you.

I mean it. Hayley has a talent for designing children’s clothing.

Are you still designing stuff? You know, for fun?

I glance at my desk, which is covered in sheets of paper, pencils, markers, and fabric samples to give me inspiration for textures and colours.

Yes. You?

Yes. It passes the time.

The front door clicks closed, and Mum calls up the stairs to tell me she’s home.

I’ve gotta go.

Don’t be a stranger.
