“I hope it works out.”

“Yeah, me too. Speaking of which—”

Uh-oh. What is he thinking?

“—she has a friend, and I thought it would be cool if the four of us went on a double date.”

I look behind me. One of our other friends hasn’t turned up without me noticing, has he? “You’re including me in ‘us’?”

Rufus laughs. “Yes. Who did you think I meant? I can’t drag Kian along because he’s gay, so you’re my man. Besides, it’s about time you dated again. I know Erica broke your heart—”

He doesn’t know the half of it.

“—but it’s been months. You need to put yourself back out there.”

“No. I don’t.”

He clasps his hands together as though he’s praying. “Please? I’d do it for you. One date. That’s all I’m asking. Megan—that’s Halle’s friend—is really pretty.” He gets his phone out. I assume he’s going to show me a picture.

I hold my hand up. “Put it away.”

“Come on, Jett. Do me a solid.”

“I’m seeing someone.” As soon as the words have tumbled out of my mouth, I wince. What a fucking stupid thing to say.

“What? Since when? Why don’t I know about it?”

“I just told you. And—not long.” I have to be careful what I say.

“Who is she?”

Of course he’d assume it was a woman. He must have suspected I’m bicurious—bi, I guess—or he wouldn’t have set me up with Kian. But as that didn’t work—as far as he knows—he must have decided his suspicions were wrong.

“Just…someone.”

He rolls his eyes. “Of course she’s someone. Is it serious?”

“No.”

“So, what? It’s just sex?”

My throat feels sticky. “I guess? It’s casual, but it’s not just sex.” I like Kian. I really do. Being with him makes me feel whole. “It started that way, but I’m starting to want more.”

Rufus clasps my shoulder. “That’s great, Jett.”

“Yeah, maybe.”

“What do you mean?”

I shrug.

“Does she want more?”

I think Kian would want more if I offered it to him, but I’m too scared to take that step.

“I swore off dating after Erica.” For good reason.

“That’s dramatic.”
