Theo’s cheeks turn an even brighter shade of pink. “Your friend is nice.”

“Callan?”

He chuckles. “Yes. Who else would I be talking about?”

I shrug.

“Are things okay between you two?”

“I think so. We had a long chat last night. Cleared the air. Caught up a bit.”

“That’s great.”

“I hope so.” I turn the hippo over and start to sand the other side. My fingers are coated in fine wood dust.

“Ouch!” Theo sucks his finger.

“You want to sand the wood, not your finger.”

“Yeah, yeah. I told you I wasn’t good at doing this sort of stuff.”

“I can teach you.”

“Really?”

I nod.

“What would we make?”

“The first thing Dad taught me to make was a birdhouse.”

Theo purses his lips. “I’m not sure we’d have much use for one of those around here.”

“Probably not. But it’s a good starting project. You’d learn how to cut wood, drill holes, and how to screw it all together. But what about a pencil holder if you want something you could use?”

“That sounds easier. Maybe I could give it to Quinn for his birthday? Assuming it’s any good.”

“When is Quinn’s birthday?”

“No clue. We should make a house calendar. We can put all our birthdays on it and Beau and Fraser’s anniversary. I bet Hendrix would help. It was sweet of him to make you a belated birthday cake.”

“It was something all right.”

Theo blinks. “You don’t think it was sweet?”

“Honestly? I have a hard time figuring Hendrix out. Most of the time, he’s a loud-mouthed brat, but then he goes and does something like that.”

“His heart’s in the right place.”

The front door shuts. Even though I’m two floors above it, the sound is unmistakable. I stop what I’m doing and look towards my door.

“Do you think that was Callan getting home?” Theo knots his eyebrows together.

“Maybe.”

“I thought he was here for work. It’s not even lunchtime.”

“I don’t know what kind of hours electricians work.” I hate lying, especially to Theo.
