I got up, moved to an open area of the room, and began to walk. I kept my head high, chin slightly up. I walked through the balls of my feet more than my heels and ensured my feet didn’t cross over. I took longer strides than I normally would, stopping to pose with my hands on my hips and my weight through my right leg.
“Stacey will take your measurements now.”
I blinked. Was that it? No more questions? Was that good or bad?
Stacey took my measurements at lightning speed, jotting them down on her clipboard.
“We’ll let you know,” Gavin said.
“It was nice meeting you.”
He replied with the vaguest of smiles. “Do yourself a favour. Get a better portfolio and a comp card.”
I nodded and left before my emotions got the better of me. The same person who had shown me to the boardroom led me out of the building. My phone pinged with messages the moment I turned aeroplane mode off.
Dillon:How did it go?
Xander:I hope it went well. What time should I cook?
I wasn’t sure who to reply to first. I picked Xander’s text at random.
Jae:I’ve just finished. Heading home now. I have no clue how long it will take me. You don’t have to cook.
While I waited for him to reply, I sent a text to Dillon.
Jae:Okay, I think. I don’t know.
My phone beeped with a reply from Xander as I sent the text to Dillon. I was starting to get mental whiplash.
Xander:I want to. It won’t be anything fancy. See you soon.
Dillon’s reply came just as I finished reading Xander’s.
Dillon:I’m sure you slayed the audition. They’ll be calling you back to sign you before you get home.
Jae:How was work?
Dillon:Training. I’ll be training all week. There are tons of regulations to learn. The highlight of the day was being measured for my uniform.
Jae:Is it cute?
Dillon:Bank chic.
Jae:That nice?
Dillon:You’d LOVE it.
I laughed as I imagined him saying that aloud, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
Jae:I’ll call you later, and you can tell me all about it.
Dillon:There’s nothing to tell. Celebrate instead.
Jae:I’ve got nothing to celebrate.
Dillon:Yet.
I rolled my eyes and put my phone away to concentrate on navigating my way to the tube station.
