He wrinkles his nose. “Maybe we’ll have to wait and find out.”
“What do you want to do for our first anniversary? Go out somewhere, or stay home and play?”
Quinn rakes his teeth over his lip. “Will you keep me on edge?”
“With pleasure.”
“Then let’s play.”
“Mid-morning? Lots of light?”
He smiles and blushes slightly. “Sounds perfect.”
I brush my lips over his. “It will be.”

QUINN
I’m inking a drawing when the doorbell rings. I can hear people downstairs, so I don’t move to answer it. Instead, I concentrate on my task, making sure my lines are neat and flowing. I like sketching downstairs in company, but inking requires a lot more concentration. Moments later, there’s a knock on my bedroom door. The door opens, and Rubin comes in.
I frown. “Was I expecting you?”
“No. I thought I’d surprise you.” My stepbrother flops onto my bed and tucks his hands under his head. “What are you doing?”
“Working.”
“Can I distract you?”
I put my pen down and turn around on my stool. “What’s wrong?”
He shrugs. “Nothing. I was just bored.”
I glance at the clock on my bedside table. It’s around eight in the evening. Stefan will have gone to The Library by now. Did he and Beau get a chance to talk first? If not, I hope they do soon.
“Why are you working so late?” Rubin asks.
“I’m behind, and I’ve got a deadline to meet.”
Rubin opens my box of chess pieces and plucks out a black rook. He turns it over in his fingers. “So? Tell them you’ve been too sleepy and you’ll be a few days late. Stress isn’t good for you.” He drops the rook into the box and takes out a white queen.
“I can’t do that.”
“Yes, you can. And you should.”
I shake my head. “I can make the deadline as long as I focus.”
“So I can’t distract you?”
“Not unless it’s important.”
Rubin sighs dramatically. “Nope. Not important. Oh, well, I’ll go and see if any of your housemates want to entertain me. Who are the single ones again?” He clicks his fingers. “Stefan’s the pro-Dom, right?”
My head nods uncontrollably. “He’s out.”
Rubin stares at me with narrowed eyes. “So, you do fancy him.”
“We’re dating.”
