“Nope. I’m so high up. I’d hurt myself if I jumped down from up here.”
Addy shakes his head. “You’re in a silly mood, aren’t you?”
“I’malwaysin a silly mood.”
“True, but you seem more relaxed than earlier. It’s a good thing,” he says quickly. “I guess I’m just wondering what’s changed.”
I sigh. “I’m still scared, Addy. That’s not going to go away overnight or even any time soon. But I missed you all day and wanted to kiss you the moment I got home, so I figure I need to work hard not to let my fear wreck things between us.”
“I’m glad.”
I blow out a breath. “Me too. Fair warning, though. I might overcompensate and get too silly.” I roll my eyes. “Like all that ridiculous stuff I said this morning about bees and bees and birds and birds.”
Addy chuckles. “I can cope with that.”
I grin at him. “Good. Now go get the cakes?”
Addy folds his arms and looks at me expectantly.
“Please?”
“Better.”
I grip the edge of the counter and keep swinging my legs as he walks the short distance to the table to pick up the cupcake box. He stands between my legs and hands me the box. I open it, showing him the six cupcakes inside. I iced them with a swirl of delicate pink buttercream and then sprinkled pale-pink edible pearls and a few smaller white ones over the top. They’re pretty in an understated way.
“They look amazing,” Addy says.
He reaches for one, but I close the lid and turn my body, shielding the box from him. He gives me a quizzical look. Until today, I’d have let him take one, but I have an urge to do things differently. I open the box again, taking one out and placing the box on the counter. I peel back the white wrapper and then hold the cake in front of his mouth. He gets the hint and takes a bite, devouring half the cupcake in one go.
“Oh God!” he says with his mouth still full of cake.
His eyelids flutter, and his eyes half roll back. It’s bizarrely sexy and leaves me wondering if his orgasm face is similar. As with everything else since last night, the thought surprises me to the point that I gasp. Addy eyes me curiously. I peel the rest of the wrapper away and pop the second half of the cake into his mouth so I can see that expression again. Addy doesn’t disappoint.
“Amazing,” he says, licking his lips. “It was so light and fluffy, and there was just the right amount of champagne.”
“I’m glad you liked them. There are five more to eat.”
“I think you need to try one.” He takes one from the box.
“I tried one at the shop.”
“Only one? You want me to eat six!”
He takes the wrapper off and brings the cake to my lips. Unlike where I let him take a bite, he stuffs it into my mouth, smearing buttercream everywhere. I cough and laugh and do my best to eat the cake. I’ve barely swallowed when his lips are on mine, kissing the buttercream away.
“You taste sweet,” he says.
“Only because you got buttercream and cake all over me.”
“Nah, that just made you taste sweeter.”
I roll my eyes, unconvinced. “Now who’s being silly?”
He points at himself. “Who? Me?”
“Yes, you.” I play with his shirt buttons. “I should cook. What do you want to eat?”
“I’m not hungry yet. Besides, you can’t get down, remember? Which means you’re my prisoner until I decide to lift you down.”
