“How about pork chops?” I ask.
“What?”
“For your Valentine’s meal? I was thinking about cooking pork with cabbage and apples.”
“Sounds amazing.”
“Only the best for you,” I say around another yawn.
“Sleep?” Addy suggests.
“Sleep good. Brownies?”
“Are you still thinking about Valentine’s Day?”
“Yeah, strawberry brownies?”
“They sound delicious. You’re going to make me hungry, and then I won’t be able to sleep.”
I chuckle sleepily. “Sorry.”
“Do you ever stop thinking about food to make?”
“Sometimes, but not often.”
“Did you make those pink champagne cakes today?” Addy asks.
“Oh. No. I didn’t have time.”
“That’s a shame. I was looking forward to trying them.”
“I’ll bring one home.”
“Only one?” He sounds genuinely affronted.
“A few.”
“Better.” He squeezes me gently. “Night, Fitz.”
“Night, Addy.”
I put my hand over his and drift off to sleep, feeling happy and content.
Chapter5
Adrian
Vanessa lives with Luna, a fawn-coloured two-year-old greyhound who thinks she’s too good to sleep on the floororin her dog bed. Instead, she takes up theentiresofa, leaving two seats for Vanessa, myself, and Fitz.
“I’ve got a pasta bake in the oven,” Vanessa says as Fitz hands her a box of cupcakes. She lifts the lid and takes a peek. “These look yummy. Thanks, Fitz.”
“You’re welcome.”
She takes them to the kitchen.
“Do you want a chair?” I ask Fitz. One of us can sit on the floor, but not Vanessa, as it’s her house.
“Nah, you take the chair. I’ll sit on your knee.” Fitz grins at me.
