“The nurse tells me you had a fall,” Spence says, his voice just as sexy as I remember it.

I instantly feel guilty for thinking that. Lexi is injured, and I’m fixating on how nice the doctor’s voice is?”

“Uh-huh. Is it broken?”

“Yes.”

I inhale sharply. Spence glances at me and gives me a reassuring smile. Surprisingly, it works, and some of the tension slips away from my shoulders. Or maybe I’m just remembering the amazing massage he gave me at the party on Friday.

“Your dad seems a little worried,” Spence says in a fake whisper. “Do you think he’s scared?”

“Yes,” Lexi whispers back.

“Can you do me a favour?”

“What?”

“Can you take care of him for me?”

“How do I do that?”

“Squeeze his hand whenever he looks worried?”

Lexi nods. “I can do that. What’s your name?”

“Doctor Price.”

“I like you, Doctor Price,” she declares.

“That’s good to know. Now, the good news is, you get to have a plaster cast put on your arm.”

“Can my friends sign it?”

“Definitely.”

Lexi purses her lips. “What’s the bad news?”

“You’re fine to go to school tomorrow.”

“Not even one day off?”

“No, sorry.”

I let out a small, strained laugh. “I thought you liked school?”

“I do, but it hurts.”

“Once the cast is on, the pain should go away,” Spence says. “We can give you some pain relief before you go to the plaster room.”

“Yes, please.”

“Wait here.”

I hold Lexi’s good hand as we wait for Spence to come back. My thoughts are torn between concern for Lexi and recalling how good Spence is with his hands. Damn, I’ve got to get my mind out of the gutter.

He comes back a few minutes later with some liquid pain relief and a sheet of stickers.

“For being so brave,” he says, letting Lexi choose which sticker she wants.
