If the little girl decided that she didn't want to play, it might make things difficult.
Kaleo spoke out of the blue.
"Can I help and get a sticker?"
Lexie barely held in her laughter. She didn't answer him directly.
She looked at the little girl, leaning in a little closer. "What do you think, sweetie? Should he get a sticker?"
Lexie bit into her lip as the little girl looked down and she could almost see the cogs turning in her head as she considered the question.
There were a few seconds when it looked like Kaleo was going to have to miss out on stickers, but then the little girl's eyes widened, and her mouth curved up at the corners.
"'kay."
It took everything inside of Lexie not to jump up with joy.
Nodding, she grinned back at the little girl. "Okay. Let's give him a sticker."
She held out the sticker, and the little girl took it from her fingers and handed it to Kaleo.
Kaleo took the sticker between his fingers and with one hand, separated the sticker from the backing.
Then he held it in front of the little girl.
Her gaze zeroed in on the sticker and then she released one hand from his T-shirt to pull the sticker free from the rest of the backing and with a surprisingly hearty amount of energy, she smacked it against his chest.
Kaleo didn't say anything, but he winced in pain.
"Wow, that sticker looks so pretty on him!"
The little girl grinned up at her like an imp. "Pretty."
Lexie smiled at that. "Very pretty."
The curtain slid to the side and Doctor Ashley stepped in.
The little girl in Kaleo's arms widened her eyes at the tall man wearing his teal set of scrubs.
She blinked a few times as he walked up, his hands holding his stethoscope.
Lexie smiled knowing that he was warming the metal just enough that it wouldn't startle the little girl too much.
"Hi there." He smiled at the little girl and like a good number of women who came in and out of the Emergency Room, she fell under the doctor's spell. "I'm Doctor Ashley. Who are you?"
The girl continued to blink, batting her eyelashes at the doctor in front of her.
She opened her mouth and then closed it again, her eyes started to fill with tears.
"It's okay, sweetie." Lexie leaned in and gently gave her back a gentle pat. "What if we give Doctor Ashley a little sticker so he doesn't feel bad?"
Her sweet little face brightened, and she nodded, her hair falling in and out of her face.
Lexie gave another sticker to Kaleo and then reached into her other pocket for a hair tie.
"We're going to have to tame your hair at least."
It was bit of chaos after that, but who said chaos couldn't be good.
