Five minutes went by then Detective Baum was back. “No one is in there. Looks like there was a struggle. Some blood, but not a lot.”

“Fuck.”

The detective nodded like he agreed. Thario pulled out his phone, knowing Griz would want to know. He sent a quick text, telling Griz there was a problem, and Elowen was missing.

Questions rose, but no one knew anything at this point. Whoever had abducted those other women had probably taken Elowen. None of them had ever surfaced. They didn’t know where to look and the leads from the other two cases had been exhausted. There was nothing to go on and he had no idea where to look for Elowen.

Chapter 31

Griz finishedthe meeting and went out to grab his phone. He’d expected to hear from Elowen, but he never received a text from her. He did have a text from Thario and it wasn’t good.

Elowen was missing.

He closed his eyes, worry filling him. She was gone, and he was stuck here.

“Hey, Griz. What’s up?” Sharp stepped closer and grabbed his shoulder. “What is it?”

“Thario went up there this morning. They went to her cabin. The back window was broken. Someone took her.”

“Crap. Who?”

“They don’t know. Cops were with him when he found the broken window. They’re looking for her, but they’ve got no clue.”

“Shit. You have enough vacation, and you’re retiring. I think you should go out there and see if you can help find her.”

Griz met Sharp’s gaze. “I’d be letting the team down.”

“No, you wouldn’t. Go and find Elowen. We all knowthe first few days are the most important in searching. I’ll talk to your CO. Send him a note.”

“Thank you. I’ll send a note.”

“Find her.”

“I will.”

He planned on finding her, and when he found the person who took her, they would pay the price. She was the most important person in his life, and he would get her back.

The drive to her cabin took most of the rest of the day. He hated the wasted time, but luckily Thario was already there, doing everything he could to find her. The biggest detriment to the search was that out in the wilderness there were few traffic cameras. They couldn’t find the path to follow and they had no idea what the person was driving or even what kind of car to look for.

The detective had allowed Thario to be there when he talked to the guests at the cabin. They hadn’t heard or seen anything. They’d been busy listening to music and drinking.

He wished they would have paid attention, but they were there for fun, not to watch over Elowen. He knew he shouldn’t have left her.

By the time he arrived, it was after five. He met Thario at the police station. He’d wanted to go to the cabin, but Thario said it would be best to meet at the station so he could talk to the detective.

“Hey, you look ragged,” Thario said.

“Yeah. I’m worried. Any news?”

Thario shook his head. “No. Nothing new.”

It wasn’t the update he wanted. He needed Elowen to be okay. They’d just reconnected and now this. She wasn’t trained military, but she was strong. Maybe she could fight off the guy who’d taken her.

A man stepped out of a conference room. “You must be the boyfriend, Justin Williamson. I’m Detective Baum.”

He shook the man’s hand. “Any leads?”

“Not yet. We’re searching for anything. Honestly, your friend coming up here to check in is allowing us to get a jump. We think he’s going to keep her alive for a few months at least.”
