Day peered up at them, purring quietly. It wasn’t her usual happy rumble, but something weak and hollow. “Really?”
“Yes.” Sariel offered a small smile. “My family abandoned me. I have also been alone for a long time.” He paused. “Figuratively speaking, as I am the property of a demon and have not actually been alone except at my home and when I have been sent out to perform certain tasks.”
“Details.” Seymour chuckled. He used his shirt sleeve to wipe away Day’s tears. “My point is that you’re not alone now, and you ain’t gotta ever be again, okay?”
“Okay.” Day shoved her face against Seymour’s neck and hugged him tight.
“You feelin’ okay to head back? Or do you want some more time here?”
“No, I am ready.” Day lifted her head, determined now. “I want to help catch the monster who killed Clancy and find Talos’s head so you may be free.”
“That sounds good to me, lil’ girl. Let’s get to gettin’.”
In a bright flash of light, the three of them were standing back in the flower shop just as they had been in the cave. Sariel pulled his wings back, though his arms remained around Seymour and Day, his smile shy but warm.
Neil stood a few feet away with Lou, who was wearing a dark blue suit and a deeply irritated scowl.
Myrna was here too. She waved.
Flanders lay stretched out on the floor by the door. He ignored them.
The floorboards fluttered gently.
MEOW MEOW MEOW
“Ha, ha.” Seymour snorted. “You know Day pulled that same trick?”
OF COURSE
SHE HAS A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR
LIKE ME
Lou narrowed his eyes. “Mr. Madison.”
“Oh, hey, Lou!” Seymour rolled his eyes. “Almost didn’t recognize you without your dick out!”
Day hissed ferociously, and her jaw opened up wide as she tried to climb out of Seymour’s arms.
“Easy, easy, lil’ girl.” Seymour petted her back gently. “It’s just Lou. He owes me a new fuckin’ tailgate.”
“It’shim!” Day growled.
“Him who?”
“The man who killed Clancy!”
CHAPTER
EIGHT
What?” Seymour scoffed, still struggling to keep Day in his arms. “Whoa, whoa, lil’ girl! Let’s slow down!”
“No!” Day hissed. “I am going to avenge Clancy and kill this man!”
Lou raised his brow, clearly confused. While he could see Day, he couldn’t understand her, so he was likely hearing a slew of very angry meowing with no idea why.
“I am going to devour him!” Day wailed.
