“He’s a cop?”Kelly asked.
“Yes.”
“What’s he like?”
Myla grinned.“He’s hot.”
Kelly rolled her eyes.“I could have guessed that.”
“He’s huge.”
Kelly’s eyebrows went up.“Are you okay with that?”
Myla pulled up to the curb in front of Kelly’s townhouse.“I never felt threatened. He has gentle eyes like my father.”
Kelly snorted.“Really?”
“Hopefully, someday you’ll get to meet him.Maybe he’ll come back next Friday.”
Kelly leaned over and kissed Myla’s cheek.“Thanks for the ride. Are we meeting tomorrow at the gym?”
“Yes.I’ll be there at eleven.”
“Sounds good.I’ll get to sleep in.”
Myla grinned.“You’ll probably need it.”
Kelly laughed and walked up the sidewalk. She turned and waved before the door closed behind her.
Myla grinned, pulled away from the curb, and headed to her own apartment building a few miles away.It was in a better part of town, but she felt better spending the money if it meant she’d feel safe.
She made sure to find a place with good security. She’d told Kaleb she hadn’t been raped, but it had been very close.Since then, she has always kept her pepper spray within arm’s reach when alone outside her apartment.Myla parked her car in her assigned spot in front of the building, then got her things ready before unlocking the car.
The tingles started when she was halfway up the sidewalk. She froze and turned. Her eyes scanned the area, but she couldn’t catch sight of anything. There was no movement and no menacing shadows. There were apartment buildings lining the entire street. Some of the apartments were situated next to large tracts of undeveloped land overgrown with grass and trees.
She hadn’t told anyone about the feeling she’d had of being watched. It seemed to become more prevalent as the days and weeks passed. She thought about telling her friends, but they would never leave her alone. She knew she would eventually have to go to Joel, the detective who worked her case, but she didn’t know if she was being stalked. All she’d had so far was a feeling, and she didn’t think that was enough to go to him about her fear.
She turned back to the building and hurried to get inside.Only when she was locked inside was she able to take a breath. She ran up the stairs to her second-floor apartment and locked herself in.She leaned against the door after all four locks were engaged, and the security system was reactivated. She was glad she’d made it a habit to have the security on at all times, whether she was in the apartment or not.
She walked shakily into her bedroom and dropped her purse on the bed.A groan burst from her as she pried off her heels. She was tempted to throw the damn shoes away, but she loved the look of them so much she couldn’t bring herself to do it.She undressed, tied up her hair, and jumped into the shower.
The tension released between her shoulders as the hot water pounded down. She closed her eyes and took relaxing breaths. She reached for her lavender bodywash, hoping it would help alleviate the remaining tension so she could sleep.
She turned the water off and stepped out to grab a towel. After slathering lotion on her body, she pulled on her nightgown that hung on the back of the bathroom door. She brushed her teeth, took out the rubber band, and walked into the bedroom.
The beep of her phone caught her attention as she was turning off the bedroom light. She found her phone at the bottom of her purse and looked at the screen. Her body stiffened when she didn’t recognize the number. She scrolled until she found the text.A smile spread across her face.
I’ll pick you up tomorrow at seven.Dinner and a movie.
She sat on the edge of her bed and texted back:Who is this?
She giggled when her phone beeped right away.
Kaleb.
Kaleb, who?
There was a pause before her phone beeped.
