“Jesus, I don’t know how you women walk in them.”

“It sucks being a woman sometimes, but I wouldn’t change it for anything.”

“What’s the worst thing about being a woman, in your opinion?”

“Periods, childbirth, and menopause are a few, but I think the fact that we can be so vulnerable hits me the worst.”

He sat forward to hear her better.“What do you mean?”

Her hand swept down her body.“Look at me.Whether I work out or lift weights, my size will always be a disadvantage against predators, and it’s hard being afraid or having my guard up most of the time.”

This man would never know what it’s like to feel that depth of fear.Just one experience with violence changed the way she looked at the world.

Chapter Two

Kaleb thought aboutit. He’d never seen it from a woman’s viewpoint. He’d had to deal with so many female victims, but he’d never gotten inside one’s head.

“Have you ever been hurt?”

His stomach twisted when he saw the flash of pain before Myla looked away for a moment.

“Yes.But I’m still lucky.I haven’t been raped or killed, so I feel I’m doing pretty good.”

Jesus. To have to live like that.Kaleb had always been a big guy, and with his dark complexion and hair, he looked even more intimidating. Now he had the scars, and people were afraid to look at him most of the time.

He reached out and used his fingers to circle her wrist.“Jesus, Baby. You really are tiny.”

She grinned and tried to circle his wrist, but couldn’t get halfway around it.“Yeah.And you’re not.”

He shook his head and grinned.“I haven’t been this size,” he said and indicated the grip he still had on her wrist.“Since I was eight, maybe.”

She snorted and tried to pull her arm away from him.“Wow, that’s comforting.”

He chuckled. His smile fell when a man tapped her on the shoulder.

“Hey, babe, you want to dance?”
