“It’s okay, honey.I’m just making sure you don’t fall.”Deb moved them through the crowd of people.“Do you want to get on a stretcher?”
Myla balked and shook her head.
“No.”
“All right. You and I will just sit, okay?”
Myla nodded jerkily.
Joel watched as the cop tried to lift Myla into the ambulance because she would start to freak when a man got near her.Deb finally got her situated on the bench, where the paramedic usually sat, and moved close to her, murmuring to her the whole time.
Joel saw the paramedics close the doors and rushed to his car to follow them.
Chapter Fifteen
Joel was on the phoneas he pulled up alongside the ambulance outside the ER doors.
“Just find him.I think he’s with the NineteenthPrecinct.Hawkins, his name is Kaleb Hawkins.”
Joel raced after the small group of people.
When he caught up with them, he had to ground his teeth together to keep from shouting out his anger. He watched as Deb and a nurse tried to get her onto a bed.He almost howled when the blanket parted, and he caught sight of her pants undone and hanging off her hips.
She fought them when they tried to take the blanket or get her on the bed.She yanked herself away from them and dropped to the floor, and wedged herself between a cart and the bed.A doctor came in and immediately tried to give her a sedative.
Joel stopped him.“Wait, just wait, dammit. Her boyfriend is coming.Don’t put her through more than she already has been.”
“She’s going through shock. We need to start treating her.”
“I know that, but it will be easier for her if her guy is here.Just wait a few minutes.”
The doctor nodded and backed off.“We need to get her stabilized. Her lips are blue, and her breathing is irregular from the shock.”
“I know,” Joel growled at the doctor.“Just give him a few more minutes.”
Deb sat on the floor in front of Myla and whispered to her.
