“It's nothing that I can't handle.”

“I'm with you, Viktor. I know you're on the safe side of things. I just want you safe, and I'll do my best to hold up my end. I swear.”

I smiled. “Well, I have to leave now.”

I bid him farewell, and he stuffed his mouth with more noodles. When I arrived home, new doors were being replaced, the mansion smelled of paint, and the chandeliers had changed. The first place I went to was the medical wing. As soon as I opened the door, I saw Mina seated beside Emilia.

“Oh, I'm sorry, sir,” she said, her eyes were teary while she sobbed.

The room was otherwise silent, and my only prayer was to see my Emilia wake up again.

Chapter Twenty-One

Emilia's POV.

I tried lifting my eyelids for what felt like the hundredth time.

They opened.

Blurry darkness gave way to light as my eyes landed on white ceilings.

My right hand felt...restrained.

Panic rose in me, and I screwed my eyes shut again.

Was I dreaming of Viktor coming for me?

Am I still being held captive?

But why am I lying down, then?

I opened my eyes again and dared to look down.

Relief flooded me, and I couldn’t hold back a teary sigh.

It was Viktor.

He had my hand in a tight grip as he slept on the chair with his head on the bed. Love and gratitude filled my heart as I gazed at his face. Worry lines etched his forehead, and his 5 o’clock shadow was prominent.

“Oh, there you are,” a middle-aged woman in a white coat remarked, turning around from the table she was bent over.

The doctor.

I lifted my second hand and brought it to my lips as I whispered, “ I don’t want to wake him.”

She nodded eagerly, an understanding smile playing around her lips as she came closer to the bed.

“How long have I been out for?” I asked quietly.

“48 hours, more or less,” she answered in a low tone.

My gaze dropped to my sleeping husband.

Has he been waiting for me to wake up for two days?

I couldn’t imagine how worrying it must have been for him. I knew that I would be sick with dread if I were in his position.

“I’ve got news,” she revealed, her smile widening. “I kept it in because I felt you should know first.”
