“And then you came into my life, and I thought I’d end up being unloved all my life. Even my dad discarded me, so how can a man who forced me into marriage treat me any better?”
She lifted her head and shifted until she was eye-level with me.
“But you did. Yes, it was rocky when we first met,” she said, and we both chuckled. “But you cared for me when I expected the opposite. You make me feel cherished- and that’s all I’ve ever wanted. It’s a feeling I wouldn’t trade for anything.”
She pecked my lips.
“I don’t think I have a choice. You’re the light I never thought I deserved. I’ll cherish you until I draw my last breath.”
“You told me you wouldn’t let go even if my dad came with the money he owed,” she said, her fingers tracing the scar across my jaw.
“And I meant it.”
“Now I’m telling you that, even if my dad came back into my life today, I won’t stop being your wife.”
My eyes bore into hers, searching.
“I don’t know how to be a good husband,” I remarked.
“We have time to learn, don’t we?”
I nodded before kissing her forehead.
We were silent again, our eyes not leaving each other, and our hands wandering in gentle touches.
“Tell me how you got your scars,” she whispered, her fingers still on my jaw.
“They are not pretty stories,” I disclosed.
“I still want to hear,” she said, dropping a kiss to my lips before resting on my chest. “Doesn’t have to be now.”
The rapping of knocks interrupted our conversation.
“Dimitri?” I called, sitting up with Emilia in my arms.
“Yes, boss. I have urgent news,” he called back.
“I’ll be in the bathroom,” Emilia notified.
I was opening the door in my trousers in a minute.
“What is it?” I questioned, only taking a step back from the doorway.
“Boss, Romano is missing,” he informed.
“What do you mean? Hasn’t he been in hiding all this time?”
“He has gone missing from his underground hideout. His people are running a search for him,” he explained.
“My dad is missing?!” Emilia’s voice came from the bathroom entrance.
I sighed.
Chapter Thirteen
Emilia’s POV.
My throat felt clogged when I breathed in. Viktor's body went warm right before we broke the embrace, and the walls closed in on me.
