David’s gaze shot over his shoulder. “Olivia.”

Maria’s eyes darted to me and her mouth dropped open.

I looked at their hands, and David released Maria’s immediately. My face flamed with embarrassment. Why hadn’t I pushed harder for the truth about his past? Why hadn’t I insisted on taking things more slowly? Now, I was stuck in this apartment with nowhere to go.

I spun around and returned to the guest bedroom where I’d just washed up, where I’d spent my first night in this apartment—the only space I could think of to call my own in a foreign place.

Moments later, David banged once on the locked door. “Open up, Olivia.”

I paced the bedroom. Feeling suddenly exposed, I re-wrapped my towel, securing it as tightly as possible under my arms. “You didn’t tell her about us?” I cried.

“I did.”

I whipped open the door. David reached for me, but I put up a hand to stop him. “Don’t touch me. When did you end things with her?”

“Just now,” he said like it was obvious, “when she came to the door.”

“Earlier, you said you’d call her.”

He sighed. “I’ve been with you the entire night. I haven’t had a chance to call her—and furthermore, it’s not necessary. There’s nothing to end.”

“Really? According to her, you can’t turn it off just likethat,” I said, snapping my fingers in his face.

He took my wrist and said on a growl, “I’ll say this one last time. You have no reason to worry. It’sdone.”

“You were holding her hand!”

His eyebrows furrowed. “To comfort her. Regardless of anything, she’s still a good friend.”

I ripped my hand away. “I must’ve misunderstood the definition offriendship. Do you let all your friends touch you when you’re naked? What if our roles were reversed, and it had been Bill on your doorstep, his hand on my bare chest?”

David’s expression dimmed. “Careful.”

“Or what?” I challenged him. “How could you not have endedeverythingwitheveryoneafter everything I gave up for you?”

I’d changed so much for him. My entirelife. Shame I’d been harboring rose in me for ending my marriage to start something completely unpredictable. I’d fallen for David in the blink of an eye. Maria was just another reminder of how fast David and I were moving, and how unsteady our foundation was.

David braced both hands against the doorjamb. “Come to bed with me, and we’ll talk through this.”

“I’m sleeping in here tonight,” I said.

“Not a chance in hell.”

“Excuse me?” I gritted my teeth. “What are you going to do, put me over your shoulder and haul me to your bedroom?”

“If that’s what it takes.”

I shouldn’t have been so shocked when my pussy fluttered. I’d dreamed of, fantasized about, and fallen in love with Davidbecausehe knew what he wanted—and he took it.

That included me. But now that he had me, how far would he go to keep me? My breathing labored, desire coiling my insides at the thought of holding hostage the one thing David wanted more than anything else tonight.

“Go find your friend Maria if you need it so bad,” I said.

His jaw locked. “Olivia—”

“I’ll see you in the morning,” I said before I slammed the door, locked it, and flung myself onto the bed. Confusion, anger, and lust mingled in me. I wanted to punish him as badly as I wanted him to throw me on the bed and fuck me until there was no question I was the only woman for him.

David tried the door handle again. “So help me God, Olivia. Unlock the door.”
