Nym chuckled. “Yes, I’m pretty sure we can tell you to the exact date, maybe even time, of when this child was conceived.”
She laughed. “That level of detail won’t be necessary. Do you want to know the gender?”
I exchanged a glance with my mate. “It’s up to you,” I said. “I don’t have a preference.”
“Let’s think on it more,” he said. “It might be nice to be surprised.”
“Indeed, it might,” I said. I didn't care either way, I just wanted my mate to be happy and for us to experience all this together. Never again would he face the future alone.
“All right, I will keep the gender to myself until you tell me otherwise.”
She clicked a few buttons, and suddenly a picture was printing. “I went ahead and printed three copies, one for each of you, and then I think the proud grandpapa Cael would like one as well.”
“You guessed correctly,” I said. I put the three pictures in the envelope she provided and put them in the breast pocket of my jacket where they would be safe.
Once Dr. Ryan finished her exam and gave Nym all the materials he would need, I helped him down from the table. She gave us her number and assured us she would see us again in a month. I thought it seemed like too long a time between appointments, but she assured me it would be fine. We’d see her more when the due date got closer.
“How are you feeling?” I asked.
“Great.” Nym smiled, and he had a bounce to his step like his excitement couldn’t be contained. “It’s just so real now, you know? We’re really going to have a baby.”
“We are,” I said.
“And tomorrow we’re going to start looking at places to open the bakery. It’s like all of my dreams are coming true. I’m so afraid to wake up.”
“Don’t be,” I said. “It’s real. I’m real. And we’re in this together. Always.” I lifted his hand to my lips and kissed it.
Nym’s shoulders relaxed, and he grinned at me. “Thank you, Dain.”
Chapter 15
Nym
My best friend eyed me up and down as we stood in the sitting room, both of us enjoying a cup of coffee. He had been playing with the fancy coffee machine ever since we moved in here, and now he somehow managed to make the most delicious combination of goodness I had ever experienced. Each day his coffee had gotten more and more delicious, and today’s was the pinnacle.
“I think our bakery needs a machine like this. People can come in and make their own fancy coffee,” he said.
“That’s a good idea. It would be a nice perk for our customers. And me.”
“We wouldn’t need a barista on staff either, as long as the machine had instructions.”
“Based on what you’ve put together here, you are a barista.”
“No, I just know what flavors you like, and I’m also trying to mask the fact that I’ve given you a decaf coffee.” He gave me a smug smile as he lifted his cup of coffee to his lips.
I whimpered at the thought, and Preston laughed.
“Didn’t you talk to the doctor about that when you met with her? She should have told you to limit your caffeine.”
“But I need it,” I said.
“You’ll be fine.”
I groaned. I suppose I would just have to endure the loss of caffeine like I did the loss of sushi. It was temporary. “I suppose you’re right, and I can take a nap later if I get tired. I just don’t want a caffeine headache.”
“You should be fine. For the past week, I’ve been giving you smaller amounts of full-fledged coffee. Today, you’re at about 10% regular coffee and 90% decaf.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’ve been measuring out my coffee for me?”
