A short while later, I find myself standing nervously next to him as I face the door. The door opens and I catch a glimpse of the outside world. Then two people step inside and shut the door behind them. I step closer to Mal, and I scent the air.

One wolf shifter, an omega. The other person is a kelpie. They are both staring at me.

“Do you remember us?” asks the kelpie brightly.

His life force is too weak. He is too pale. He is fading. His mate is dead and the mate bond is pulling him to death, to follow his mate. The kelpie is still smiling.

“Lello,” I say.

He beams at me. “Yes! That’s right.”

I turn to the shifter. “You are Red.” My voice is raspy. I guess I don’t use it much.

The shifter smiles warmly. “I’m glad you remember us.”

I don’t really. I’m not even sure how I know their names, but I do. I also know I have nothing to fear from them. Though that could be merely because they are a kelpie and a shifter, and I am a demon. They are no match for me. Not while I’m unbound.

Maybe I should make sure they understand this? Just so there is no confusion, no threat.

Mal’s heavy hand on my shoulder makes me flinch. It reminds me that he is the one in control here, not me. All the dominance is his. I have nothing to prove because I am nothing.

Lello’s too dull eyes flick between Mal and me. He is bright with intelligence, even though his life is fading.

“Are you happy here, Gray?” he asks.

I nod. I am happier than I have been in forever. I’m not bound and chained to a bed. Mal and only Mal is filling me with his seed. He doesn’t hurt me. It is a vast improvement.

Lello does not seem convinced. I don’t know why he doesn’t understand. He seems as if he should, for I can see in his eyes the echoes of being held down and forced. Of being given no choice. He knows exactly what it is like.

So surely he is exulting in being out of there? He must be relieved. But maybe his new keeper is not as agreeable as Mal. Or perhaps Lello will never be happy unless he is truly free.

Well, death is going to claim him soon enough. He will be free then.

Envy quickens in my blood. I will live for however long Mal wishes me to, and as he is not entirely human, for all I know that could be thousands of years. There will never be any freedom for me. I do not get to escape.

Mal’s grip on my shoulder tightens.

“Alright boys, Gray is getting a bit hangry. You should run along now.”

Indignation coils through my guts. I am not hungry or angry. How dare he make assumptions. I draw in a deep breath of outrage and his scent fills my lungs. His rich, manly, musky scent. Memories of the delight of his cock flood my mind. My mouth waters. I whimper. Iwant. With a need that burns.

“We can have lunch?” says Lello with innocent blue eyes.

Red starts to pull him away. “He isn’t hungry for food.”

Lello’s eyes widen with sudden understanding. “Oh. Enjoy!” He gives a cheery wave and then the door shuts. Closing out the sunshine and the fresh air.

I don’t mind. Right now, I want other things.

I turn to Mal, but he walks away from me. He sits on a chair and frees his cock. It is erect and waiting. I lick my lips. Mal’s eyes are hooded and dark.

“Seems it’s going to take a little longer for your appetite to settle down.”

His cock is full and proud. A good length and girth. It looks delicious.

“Come and get it then.”

I glare at him. I’m hungry. It has been a terribly long time since I rode. I’d rather lie back in my hammock, spread my legs and lethim fill me. But my desires and preferences have been irrelevant for centuries.
