“What? I can see your mind working,” Enzo commented, drawing my eyes up to his in the mirror.

“Why did you accept? Most people are grossed out by dead bodies.”

“Not me. And not you either, apparently.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Just because I’m a true crime junkie doesn’t mean I’m not grossed out by dead bodies.”

“True. But to answer your question, several reasons. One, you don’t say no to the mob, two, the money, and three, it gives me an adrenaline rush.”

I rolled my eyes playfully. “Of course you’re an adrenaline junkie.”

He chuckled. “I am. One of the reasons I became an EMT; constant adrenaline rush when I’m on the job. Keeps me on my toes.”

My lips curved up. “Doesn’t disposing of dead bodies go against your code of conduct or something?”

He laughed harder. “My conscience isn’t that pure. And me cleaning up crime scenes doesn’t affect whether or not the crime is committed. People are being killed regardless of whether I dispose of them or not.”

“I guess you have a point,” I mused.

My eyes started to feel heavy and I fought a yawn. Enzo chuckled. “Get some rest, True Crime Junkie.”

I rolled my eyes, but didn’t argue. I was still exhausted, despite the short naps I’d taken earlier. Covering myself with my new blanket, I curled up against the door and laid against the pillow I’d propped against the window moments earlier.

It took only a few moments until I fell asleep.

Chapter Four

Enzo

Ihad a good amount of time to think on the drive up to my cabin. When I was young, I used to hate the long trip, dreading the waiting game from the time we left until the time we arrived. But now, I enjoyed the peace and quiet as I drove through the picturesque scenery. It was a nice change from the fast pace of my everyday life.

My parents used to bring my brother and me up to the cabin every summer when we were young, as far back as I could remember. We’d even been a couple of times after we graduated high school, but the annual family trips stopped soon after we became adults.

A smile curved my lips as memories of our trips played in my mind. I’d had some of the best times of my life there. I was trying to get back into making annual visits, but my brother had enlisted in the military shortly after he’d turned twenty-one so he hadn’t been since the last time we all went as a family. And my parents were too old to make the trip alone on a regular basis, but they’d come with me sometimes.

Glancing at Gianina sleeping in the rear view mirror, I grinned. When I realized I was smiling, I forced myself to stop. I didn’t need to get caught up with a capo’s daughter that I couldn’t have.

That would be asking for a painful death.

I was trying to make her comfortable but I couldn’t deny that I was balancing the line between courteous and flirtatious. I liked making her smile and laugh. And seeing her flush made my dick twitch.

Stop thinking like that. You can’t have her.

So of course I wanted her more.

When I’d first been assigned this task, I wasn’t looking forward to it. But the more time I spent with Gianina, the more I enjoyed the thought of spending a month with her.

A month secluded in the mountains. Alone.

The possibility that the power would go out was almost a certainty with the winter storm coming. Which meant using body heat to help stay warm.

My cock started to get hard. I couldn’t deny that thinking about warming her petite body with mine turned me on.

I shook my head, trying to dispel the thoughts from my mind. That would lead down a dangerous road that would get me in trouble.

Trying to get my mind off of Gianina, I tried to focus on the steps I needed to take once we arrived at the cabin. Unpacking the car, perimeter security, supply inventory, and getting the house in order.

Once I got Gianina settled, I could set up traps and all my surveillance equipment to prepare for the worst case scenario: being found.
