Finn let out a low rumble, but Lizzy thumped his chest. “Stop growling at me.”
Jen smiled. Finn growled at Lizzy a lot. It reminded her of the way her and Decebel’s relationship had been.
“Had been?”his voice filled her mind.“Baby, you still make me growl on a regular basis, and I’m not talking about bedroom growls.”
Jen laughed. “Believe me, B, I know. Your growling is sexy. Hence why I want you to do it so often.”
He shook his head.“Nothing but trouble.”
“And yet you love me, anyway.”
Kara couldn’t believethe other healers and their mates were in the sprite realm. They would be a complete wheeler team again.
“If everyone would find a seat,” Fane spoke up, “I’ll fill you in on why our guests are here.”
The room quieted down quickly as the newly arrived couples, courtesy of Adam, Cyn, and Peri, took their own seats around the room. It felt like old times, only this time they were missing people because some were already out working on missions Fane had given them.
“I’ve called in the other healers because I want to see if you all can use your magic to seek out the location of the hybrids,” Fane began.
“Umm,” Sally bit her bottom lip. “How exactly are we going to do that?”
“Your magic is pure.” Fane pushed away from the desk where he’d been propped on his hip. Jacque shifted with him, as she often did. The two seemed to be in sync with each other’s movements. It was fascinating to watch. “The hybrids that have escaped are—” He paused, seeming to look for the right word.
“Ugly,” Andora offered for him. “Their auras are black, which means they weren’t good people to begin with. They had dormant wolves inside them, and then Cain added his concoction, and it brought out the stronger evil nature within them.”
“What makes you think we can find them, Fane?”
“I don’t know for sure, Stella, but there’s no harm in trying.”
“Can you promise that?” Nick’s voice held a clear challenge.
“Nick!” Drayden, the Canada alpha, snapped.
Fane held up a hand to stay Drayden. “It’s a fair question, and I am not so insecure that I can’t stand up to some scrutiny.”
Kara glanced at Jacque and saw the pride on her face as she looked up at her mate. It made Kara’s heart warm to see such a strong alpha pair.
There was a knock on the door before Rachel entered. She looked around the room and then at Fane. “You requested me?”
“Oh, snap.” Jen groaned. “Does that mean sergeant hard-ass is in charge of all the kids?”
“If you mean Gavril”—Rachel smirked—“then yes. He’s perfectly capable of watching over the kids, even your hellion.”
“Thank you for coming, Rachel.” Fane explained to her what he’d already told the group. “I figured, considering you’ve been a healer for a much longer time, that you could assist me in what I’m attempting to do.”
Rachel folded her arms across her chest and chewed on her bottom lip. She glanced at each of the healers. Her eyes paused longer on Kara and Sally before she turned back to the alpha pair. “I think it should be myself, Stella, Heather, and Anna that attempt this. Kara and Sally have been severely exposed to evil, and they’re both with child. No evil should have the opportunity to get too close to them, even in the spirit realm, which is the plane we’d be traveling on.”
“So, how do we do this?” Stella rubbed her hands together. “The longer we wait, the more chance those SOBs have to hurt people.”
Fane consideredRachel’s words carefully. Though he hated keeping any of his pack from participating, she made a valid point about protecting Kara and Sally in their delicate conditions.
“Very well,” he conceded with a nod to Rachel. “Kara and Sally, would you help Gavril in watching the young ones? The rest of us will attempt to locate the hybrids through the healers’ abilities.”
Kara sighed. “I won’t lie. I’m exhausted and actually glad to sit this one out.”
“Do I need—” Nick began, but his mate held up a hand.
“I’ll be fine. Sally will be with me. You do whatever they need you to,” Kara told him gently.
