Or maybe I’m just attributing too much to the power of my dick and I’m horny as fuck again.

But I take it slow. After what she confided in me, I don’t want to rush her back into sex. She’ll let me know when she’s ready for that. For now, I just savour the taste of her skin, the small sounds she makes as my mouth continues to roam over her.

And then the fucking doorbell rings.

Amber’s eyes fly open, wide as they meet mine.

“Who the fuck is that?” She hisses, and I grunt out my frustration before dropping a quick kiss to her lips.

“Stay right here.”

I get to my feet, heading out into the hallway, yanking a sweater from the banister and pulling it on over my head. It’s thankfully long enough to hide my raging erection, and I take a deep breath to stop myself punching whoever is ringing my damn doorbell square in the face. I tear the door open, and there stands Kathy Coleman.

Who lives right next door to Amber’s parents.

“Morning Kathy,” I say with a wide smile, trying my best to relax, just fucking relax and act natural. “Here for a cup of sugar?”Jackass.

“I’m sorry to bother you, Theo, but I’m a little worried.” Kathy wrings her hands and glances past me into the house. “Is Laurie home?”

“No, she’s in Connecticut with her mom, seeing her grandparents, why?”

“Now, you’ll probably think I’m being silly, but last night, I was out with the dog, it was very late, and I swear I saw Amber go to her house.” She glances around us furtively, and leans closer. “With aman.”

Fucking holy shitting hell.

“Oh.” It’s all I can say, and I frown, trying to think as my heart does laps around my entire nervous system and my brain melts into a puddle somewhere near my asshole. “I, uh, I don’t know. I can ask Laurie to call her, if you’re worried. Did you, uh, did you try the door? Is she home?”

Kathy nods. “Yes, I did, of course, but there was no answer, and her parents are down in Boston. I don’t want to call and worry them if it’s nothing.”

“No, definitely, you don’t want to call them, no, not over something like this.”No, that would probably be bad, very bad. “I wouldn’t worry, Kathy. I’ll tell Laurie to check in on her, and everything’ll be fine.” I give Kathy a nod. “Right?”

Kathy shifts on her feet, and shakes her head. “It’s just so strange, you know, Amber’s a good girl, and her mother would never approve of her having a man in the house, I mean, it’s just so unlike her!”

“Maybe it was just a friend from college.” My grin feels maniacal. I’m sure it looks it. “It was probably completely innocent.”

“Morning Mrs Coleman!”

The bright voice from the driveway nearly gives me a heart attack. Kathy and I both look over at the same time, to see Amber in sweats, one earbud still in her ear, the other in her hand, her hair piled on her head. She waves to us both, a big smile on her face.

“Morning, Mr Rembrook!” Amber’s eyes meet mine, bright and sparkling.

“Amber!” Kathy throws her hands up. “What are you doing jogging in this weather?”

“I just needed to stretch my legs, Mrs Coleman. I had a long drive yesterday.” She raises a hand and waves, jogging past the house, then stops short. “Oh, Mr Rembrook?”

Speak. Speak. I clear my throat and fix a smile on my face. “Y-yes, Amber?”

“I think Laurie still has my Converse in her room, can I come in and check?”

My eyes flash to Kathy’s face, but her expression is neutral. Of course, why would it be weird for mydaughter’s best friendto ask to come into my house? My guilt is beating me over the head, and I nod, sweeping a hand past me.

“Sure, come on in.”

“Thanks!” Amber jogs to the door, then stops to jab a thumb over her shoulder. “Oh, Mrs Coleman? I think Ollie got out of your yard, I saw something white and furry running towards the park.”

Kathy’s eyes widen. “That damn dog!” She breaks into a run, across my drive and out into the street, in the direction of the park.

Amber turns back to me, smiling sweetly, her hands clasped behind her back, just like they were when she appeared at my door yesterday afternoon.
