“Not at all.” She nuzzles against my chest, head tucked under my chin. “I can’t wait to do it again.”

I laugh softly. “Well, the food will take a little while. But…” I pull back from her and cradle her face in my hands. “The condoms are all the way upstairs, so.” I shrug, and Amber giggles.

“Well, you could just eat me out again instead?”

She shrieks as I yank down the boxer briefs she’s wearing and sink to my knees.

“Theo, oh my god!” She laughs, but that dissolves quickly into moaning as I bring my mouth down to her pussy, swirling my tongue inside her. “I was - Oh god, I was joking!”

I wasn’t.

The damn phone rings.

It’s Laurie’s ringtone. She must be frantic. Or maybe something happened?Shit.I’m here fucking her best friend, and maybe they had an accident.

I stop and look up at Amber with a sigh.

“I should take this, it’s Laurie.”

She nods, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She licks her lips, clasping her thighs together as I get to my feet and swipe my phone to answer Laurie’s call.

“Hey, peanut!” God, I may not have looked guilty, but I sound it now. “You all good?”

“Where were you?” Laurie’s exasperated tone sounds down the line. “I’ve sent you a million snaps.”

“Sorry, I… I went to the gym and got sidetracked.” My eyes flash to Amber, who’s avoiding my gaze. “Anyway, how was the drive? Grandma and Grandpa OK?”

“Yeah, they’re great. We’re just getting dinner.” She pauses, noise and commotion and the jangle of keys in the background. “Is something wrong?”

“Nope, everything here is just fine, why?”

“You just… sound weird.” Laurie mutters something to someone beside her that sounds likeYeah he’s fine, and I realise now that it’s been hours since they left and no one has been able to reach me. “You just scared me, is all.”

“Oh, peanut, I’m sorry. I’m fine, I promise. Just getting in those gym hours, you know?”

“Yeah yeah, you and the gym.” The worry lifts from her voice, and she laughs. “I know how you can get.”

“You sure do.”

“Is Amber home?”

My heart drops into my fucking feet. How could she know? Did someone see Amber come here and realise she never went home?Fuck. Bad. Very bad.

“I-I have no idea. Why? Is Amber meant to be home?”

Amber’s head shoots up at the mention of her name, and she shakes her head.

“Yeah, she said she’d be home today, but I haven’t been able to reach her all afternoon. I’m just worried.”

My heart is still thumping at the base of my stomach, having not made it all the way back to where it’s meant to be after the mention of Amber’s name. I take a deep breath and steady myself, trying to sound bright and normal, fuckingnormal.

“Listen, I’ll, uh, I’ll go by her house on my way back from the gym and make sure her car is there. She probably just went right to bed after the drive.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right.” Laurie mutters,I’m coming, and sighs. “I gotta go. Mom’s new boyfriend is taking us out.” Her voice drops a little, and I can’t help but wonder if the new boyfriend hasn’t impressed as much as Mella was hoping.

“Well, you have fun!” Thank fuck my voice doesn’t crack with the enthusiasm I put into that statement.

“Love you, Dad!”
