“I can’t wait to tell Rico,” Marcy said. “We’ve seen on the radar that she’s been moving around but no one has actually spotted her since she left the house.”

The sun fully came up then, filling the morning with a pleasant warmth, and Tank welcomed it by purring louder. When a bird of prey flew overhead and landed further down on a branch, she followed it with her intense stare, then shot off without warning.

“Bye for now.” Marcy helped Zoe back up on her feet, and they watched her sprint off, elegantly sliding through the rough terrain with only a gentle rustle.

Zoe took Marcy’s hand and leaned into her, resting her head on her shoulder. “Do you think we’d be together if it hadn’t been for Tank? I mean, if you hadn’t called me to help out with her, we wouldn’t have had this experience together.”

Marcy put an arm around her and kissed her temple. “She did bring us together, didn’t she?” A comfortable silence settled between them as she thought about it. “You know what? I think we would have ended up together regardless. There’s not a chance I would have let you slip through my fingers; you had me that day in the staff quarters when you helped put a dressing on my hand.”

“Yeah. I feel the same.” Zoe gave her an adoring smile and brushed a hand through Marcy’s hair. “Some things are inevitable, and I believe you were one of them. It’s like destiny told me all those years ago that you were the one I would spend my life with and maybe that’s why you were so hard to forget.” She paused and met Marcy’s eyes that were filled with love. “It just wasn’t the right time.”

“It wasn’t,” Marcy whispered, cupping her face so tenderly that Zoe felt a lump form in her throat. “But the time is now.”
