“We got married,” Cooper said again. Grant reached for them and wrapped them both in a hug that nearly lifted Adam off his feet. Cooper laughed, and Grant leveled Adam with a sharp look.

“You should have told me,” Grant accused.

“We did!” Cooper laughed. “Just now.”

“They got married at lunch,” Wyatt said, refilling his wine glass.

“He knew?” Grant thumbed over his shoulder toward Wyatt.

“He asked me earlier and I didn’t want to lie to him about it,” Adam said.

“This is great.” Grant nodded. “This is really good news. I’m happy for you guys.”

The timer in the kitchen went off and Grant hurried toward the oven, carefully removing the chicken in the white speckled roasting pan. He carried it to the table and set it on the trivet, then returned with the vegetables and a loaf of bread. Wyatt brought the wine, setting it down before taking a seat at the far end of the table.

“And I got some more good news today,” Adam said, sliding into the chair at the corner of the table that was unofficially his.

Grant leaned over with a carving knife and sliced into the chicken to carve it.

“You’ll cut yourself,” Wyatt warned, holding out a carving fork. Grant gave him an annoyed look and turned his attention back to Adam.

“Oh?”

“Wyatt is staying in North Edgewood.”

“Shit,” Grant cursed and the knife clattered to the table.

“You’llcutyourself,” Wyatt said again, sounding resigned. He stood, pushing his chair back from the table. “I’ll go get you a bandage. I know where you keep them.”

Wyatt walked out of the room and Grant shook his hand behind him to alleviate the pain.

“Are you alright?” Cooper asked with a frown.

“I’m fine,” Grant assured them. “Just a nick.”

Wyatt returned, tossed a small first aid kid in Grant’s direction, and sat back down at the table. He took a drink of his wine and sighed.

“Areyouall right?” Cooper asked Wyatt this time.

“I’m freshly divorced, about to quit my six figure job and move into my dad’s house.” Wyatt rolled his eyes. “I’m great.”

“We’re here because your dad and Cooper had a big day today,” Grant said from the sink, a bandage half wrapped around his thumb. “Don’t ruin it with your attitude.”

Wyatt opened his mouth to protest further.

“Please,” Grant said, coming back to the table. He pushed the carving set toward Wyatt and said it again, “Please.”

Wyatt picked up the knife and fork, then carved up the chicken without another word. He served all four of them, and Adam waited to eat until everyone was settled.

“Right,” Cooper said with a nervous laugh. “So, we got married today, and Wyatt is staying in town. Anything else exciting to report?”

Adam pursed his lips, swirling his wine around. “I…I want to say something. Can I say something?”

“I don’t know,” Grant quipped. “Can you?”

Adam smacked him and let out a tired breath. “I’m bad with feelings, but I’m really happy. I’m happy to have Cooper back after so long, and I’m happy that my son is here and that he’s staying. I’m happy we’re all together. This isn’t the life I pictured for myself, but it’s a good one.”

“Dad.”
