Saxon closes the distance between us easily as I bring my hands up, aware of how useless it is to try and defend myself against him. I scream as he gets closer.
“Stay away from me!”
“Angel, let me–”
“Have you killed him yet?” I shout as Saxon grips the tops of my arms.
“Killed who?”
I bend over, sobs overtaking me as he pulls me close. I can barely stay upright, but I try to push against his huge body.
“Blade. I saw you. You had a gun to his head.” A flash of lightning makes the whole world an eerie white blur for a moment.
Saxon holds me close, turning our bodies so that his huge frame shelters me from the driving wind. “You have the wrong idea. That was a run-through.”
“A run-what? Why should I believe you?” My voice hitches.
“It’s fake. We’re acting out a scenario so I can get Blade to give back the bag he stole from the cartel without them killing him. They owe me a couple of favors, so if I hold the gun to his head and say I want to deal out my own justice, they’ll agree to let me kill him.” His voice sounds amused.
My body stiffens. “You can’t kill him.”
“I’m not killing him. I promised I’d look after you, angel. And I don’t break my promises. He’s my family too, now.”
I sniff. “I’m confused. So what happens to him?”
His arms tighten around me. “I tell the cartel the MC are taking him into the woods to deal with him. But my army buddy Rock runs a MC in Silent Lake. It’s west of here, about three hours away. He’s good at straightening people out. Never failed yet and he’s had some tricky members. Blade needs a new start, in a new town with no history. He’s agreed to it. We can go visit him once he calms down a little.”
My body sags in Saxon’s embrace. “I thought you were killing him. And then you were going to kill me.”
He chuckles. “You thought I’d do that? Were you still asleep? Having a nightmare?”
“How did you find me?”
He laughs again. “You made one hell of a racket when you left. Half the club came downstairs to see what happened. I put two and two together, followed your trail…”
I lift my face to look into his eyes. He’s looking back at me intently, a slight grin raising the corner of his lips.
“I don’t know. How do I know I can trust you? You’re a big, bad MC Prez. My brother told me you were trying to kill him. You deal with scary people like the cartel every day. Nobody in your MC will disobey you.”
“And that’s a bad thing?” He chuckles, lowering his lips to my cheek.
I start to shiver, the wave of adrenaline leaving my body. Another flash of lightning illuminates the trees around us.
Saxon examines my arms. “You’ve scratched up your arms, sweetness. We need to get you back home.”
I turn, trying to walk back the way I came and he keeps his hold on me. He lifts me up against him, his muscles flexing as he holds my body tight against his. I put my head on his chest, finally giving into the realization that this man only wants my happiness.
He’s here to take care of me.

SAXON
Kaia’s got dark circles under her eyes and her face is pale when I put her down outside the back door of the house. Her shirt is soaking wet
“Come inside, have something to eat, and then talk to your brother,” I say, taking her hand. In the laundry room, I gently remove her shirt, trying to ignore those soft curves underneath. I replace her shirt with a clean, soft hoodie of mine and take her through to the club.
Most of the MC are lounging around on the sofas. Hawk’s mom, Annie, is behind the bar, making her famous pancakes. An old Chuck Berry tune is playing and Annie’s dancing, effortlessly flipping pancakes with a spatula in one hand and pouring maple syrup with the other. Kaia’s stomach growls and I squeeze her hand.
