“What do you mean?”
“Maybe Joe isn’t all that he’s cracked up to be. I mean, most of the time I was there, I felt like he was putting on a show. There was just something about him I didn’t like. He was almost too kind, too accommodating for my liking.”
I thought back to what he was saying and could see where he was coming from. It was true. He was too nice, too accommodating, especially with us and my mother. Well, he wasn’t so nice to Dylan the other night though. I’d heard him yelling from the office.
“Maybe you’re right. Maybe this is the reason Mom has been waiting for.”
“I think so. Don’t be too hard on yourself, but whatever you do, be careful with Dylan.”
“Why?”
“Just be careful. I don’t want to find you in a similar situation.”
I appreciated my brother’s concern for me, but Dylan was nothing like his father. In fact, he was the complete opposite. I didn’t want to dismiss his concerns, though.
“I will, I promise. You’d be the first to know if something wasn’t right. I promise you.”
“You better. Well, I have to go. My time is up. Tell Mom to call me once she is feeling up to it. Love you both.”
“Love you too.”
Chapter 17
Dylan
Knox, Clay, Lucas, and I sat in the boardroom looking over our new contracts. It had been a relief when Clay called and said he was bringing them over this morning after the gym. I’d been worried about my position with the Dominators, especially after everything that went down with Carlie, and I knew Knox was worried about his re-aggravated injury.
“Looks pretty standard,” Knox said, shoving his copy back into the manilla envelope. “Guess I’ll have my lawyer look it over to make sure everything is line.”
“Same here,” I muttered, shoving mine back into the envelope too.”
Clay and Lucas did the same before sitting back in the chair, relaxing a bit.
“Told you that you had nothing to worry about,” I said to Knox.
“Ah, you never know. I could be considered a weak link.”
“Fuck them if they think that. You’re a fucking awesome player, better than most,” I said, tapping the envelope.
“Have you heard anything about Carlie yet?”
I shook my head just as my phone vibrated against the table. I glanced at the screen, wondering if it was Aurora, but it was my lawyer.
“Finally. I’ll be right back,” I muttered, grabbing my phone and heading to the hall for some privacy.
“Hello.”
“Dylan, it’s Thomas.”
I’d been waiting on pins and needles for his call for days and I hoped he had the answers I wanted to hear.
“Hey, Thomas, any news?” I questioned.
“Good news. Between me and my partner and the lawyers with the Dominators, we have been able to get in touch with Carlie and her lawyers. We could get them to agree to her taking a paternity test.”
“Perfect,” I said, breathing a sigh of relief.
“We should have the results in a couple of days.”
