“Jerry Olson. From the dinner party?”

Oh, right. That felt like a million years ago with everything that had happened since then. I cringed at the thought of working with a lobbyist, making my dad chuckle.

“Yeah, I figured as much. But I just got of the phone with Cole Dovey, the state representative. You know who that is?”

How could I not, in a family that valued politics so highly?

“Yes, a congressman.”

“Well, he’s looking for a legislative assistant. The job is yours if you want it.”

My dad delivered this news like he was telling me that Christmas had come early, but I couldn’t find it in me to be happy about it. That job would be a lot of paper pushing, conducting research, and monitoring pending legislation. Pretty much the most boring thing ever.

In fact, I couldn’t even think of a job in my field of study that wouldn’t be boring. Maybe if I became president myself…

Yeah, right.

I was learning more about my wild side every day, and I was pretty sure that I’d never make it as a first lady. I was in a secret relationship, after all. That kind of scandal would be discovered right away. Yet I had no interest in ending it.

Besides, in my heart, I knew what career I wanted. I always had. Looking at my father sitting behind his desk, I tried to imagine myself as a senator like he was. Did he even like being one? I’d never thought to ask him.

“Aren’t you going to say anything?” he asked. I blinked, realizing I’d been quiet for too long.

“Uh...can I think about it?”

Dreaded disappointment flashed in his eyes, but he nodded.

“Sure, princess.”

I left his office, surprised by the fact that I didn’t feel guilty. Normally, I’d agree to something like this without hesitation, just to get his approval. But lately, I was feeling like I shouldn’t have to keep going along with what my parents wanted to earn their happiness.

Wasn’t it enough that I was marrying a man I didn’t love?

That should be enough. I should at least be able to have my café, damn it.

With that thought in mind, I went to my bedroom and sat down at the corner desk in my bedroom. I opened it and pulled up a Word document.

Taking a deep breath, I typed the wordsBusiness Planin bold print. I had majored in political science, but I’d minored in business. It was time to put that education to good use. I was going to take back a part of my future.

“I don’t know about this,” Sabrina said timidly as I picked up the darts. She’d become something of a regular here at the Blue Dog in the last couple of weeks. At first, I loved it, having her in my space...showing her off. But lately I was feeling like I was missing a huge part of her life and it was unsettling.

I was starting to want more.

“Come on, I’ll teach you how to throw,” I said, leading her over to the piece of white tape on the floor that marked how far back players should stand from the dart board. “It’ll be fun.”

“Okay, I guess.”

She took the three darts I handed to her, holding them completely wrong as she closed her fist around them.

“Like this.” I showed her. “Now spread your legs.”

Heat flared in her eyes and the response in my body was immediate as an erection started to form.

“Right here in the middle of the bar?” she asked saucily.

“I meant shoulder-length apart,” I told her, demonstrating.
