He also got a new jersey that was hella pricey and he almost yelled at me for even getting it, but it was his favorite player, and it was signed. I’ll never tell him that I got on sale.
I also bought him a new security app for his computer. His was outdated and he was worried about working on some stuff for his clients.
All in all, it was a nice Christmas Eve. We watched a couple of movies before curling up and just sleeping.
No sex, no touching, just the two of us curled up, and it was the sweetest thing to me.
I shifted in bed as I heard the front door close, wondering who would even be here this early in the morning.
I yawned, finally rolling out of bed. I grabbed a hoodie I had stolen ages ago from him and walked into the kitchen, grinning at the spread.
He had made French toast, eggs, sausage, coffee, and even a special creamer, all for me. Christmas was always one of my favorite holidays, but usually it was spent as a chaotic day with family and the crowds, so to have a calm one was a wish I didn’t know I wanted.
“Who was at the door?” I asked, taking a seat as I sipped the coffee, moaning once more at how amazing he was at that.
“Your last gift.”
I raised my brow in question.
“Dare I ask?”
“You know I won’t tell Kelly, so no point in asking anyway, right?”
I shrugged as I sat my coffee down, only to dig into the meal. “Do you have to be amazing at everything?”
“Not everything, just your favorites. You know, starting down this road, we’re probably going to annoy each other a whole lot more now.”
“You mean like you being unable to pick up after yourself?” I teased.
“Hey now. I meant more along the lines of your disorganization. Or your habit of always losing things.”
“I always find them when I need them,” I protested. “I have no doubt that things might be tricky. But I really also believe it will all work out.” I reached over and patted his leg. “I mean, come on, we pretty much were a couple. The only thing we hadn’t done was the sex and as we both proved, it’s pretty good between us.”
“The best I’ve had.”
I stared at him, my heart pounding because that was true. He really was the best I’ve had. And I have no doubt that if I said I wanted to try something, he’d be there to help me. Or there to learn it as well. He’d catch me when I’d fall. Or laugh first and then pick me up.
“Honestly Josh, same here. I know you went into this, asking me to help you, but I learned that it was more like you were teaching me. I’m forever grateful to you for it.” I paused, tapping my nails on the table.
“What is it, Kelly?”
“I think my feelings for you changed before I ever caught onto them. I think my mind was doing things before my heart was ready. Don’t be mad but a few years back I read your journal. You know, the one that has the bucket list?”
“Yeah? It’s not a top secret and it’s not well hidden. My own fault if I didn’t want it to be read. But what does that have to do with anything?”
I got up, walking over to the tree and pulling out a smaller present.
“There’s a lot of great things on that bucket list, and I’d love to travel with you to all of them. But they’re also really pricey. Loving someone, really loving them, is putting their needs and wishes before your own.”
“I’d agree there.”
“Which is why I bought this. My savings were for me, for some trip that I wasn’t sure I’d ever go on. So, when the opportunity came for me to get it, I thought about spoiling you. And looking back on it now, I think that it was my mind telling my heart that my feelings had changed. And I wanted far more than your friendship but didn’t know how to change it. Anyways, I hope you like it.”
I handed him the gift, almost smiling at his confused look, then laughing at his shocked expression. He looked at the two Amtrak train ride tickets that traveled from coast to coast and then finally at me.
“Kelly, I can’t….these….wow. Thank you.”
He reached over, cupping the back of my head, and brought my lips to him, kissing me with such passion that I could feel how much he loved that gift. And that was worth every penny I spent.
