“What does he want?”
I open the text. “He’s asking how Paris is going. And if we’re ‘being gross and in love’ because apparently that’s his biggest concern.”
Ledger laughs and pulls out his own phone. “Let me call him.”
He puts it on speaker, and Alexi answers on the second ring.
“There’s my favorite married couple. How’s Paris?”
“Beautiful,” I say. “We just finished a business dinner.”
“Business dinner.” Alexi snorts. “That’s code for Dad showing off his hot wife to impress French people, isn’t it?”
“Something like that,” Ledger says dryly.
“How are you feeling, Savannah? You know, with the baby and everything?”
It’s sweet that he asks. That he cares.
“I’m good. A little tired, but good.”
“Make sure Dad isn’t working you too hard. He forgets that not everyone has his ridiculous stamina.”
“I’m right here,” Ledger says.
“I know. That’s why I’m telling her in front of you. Accountability.” Alexi’s grin is audible. “Anyway, I just wanted to check in. Make sure you’re both alive and not having some dramatic fight in the City of Love.”
“We’re fine,” I assure him. “Better than fine, actually.”
“Good. Because I’m getting used to having a stepmom, and I’d hate to have to start over with someone new.”
I laugh. “You’re stuck with me, kid.”
“Thank God. Okay, I’ll let you go. Love you both.”
“Love you too,” Ledger says.
After we hang up, I lean against Ledger’s shoulder. “He’s a good kid.”
“He likes you. That means everything to me.”
“I like him too. It’s weird having a stepson who’s practically my age, but he makes it easy.”
“He does.” Ledger kisses the top of my head. “You’re good for both of us.”
We sit in comfortable silence for a while, just enjoying being together. Then my eyes drift to the bathroom, and I notice something I missed earlier. “Is that a sauna?”
Ledger follows my gaze through the open bathroom door. “It is.”
“This hotel has everything.”
“It’s one of the best in Paris. Why? Want to try it?”
The idea is suddenly very appealing. Heat and steam, and being alone with my husband after an incredible evening.
“Not while I’m pregnant. We’ll have to come back.”
He smiles. “That can be arranged.”
