As her magical night with Kendrick stretched on, she began to formulate a plan.

Maybe, just maybe, she could make this all work.

Perhaps she’d get her fairytale ending after all.

Chapter Thirteen

“Isn’t it a lovely day?” Kendrick asked the following morning.

A brilliant December sun shone through the back windows of the den as he peered out into the yard. He’d checked the temperature on his phone. Fifty-five degrees. Not too cold. Certainly not too hot.

The Christmas music that always seemed to be playing in the den was on, with Michael Bublé singingIt’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmaswith a full orchestra accompaniment.

Sitting on the couch drinking coffee, Isaiah and Jack looked at one another.

It was Isaiah who said, “You get some last night or something?”

Jack laughed.

So did Kendrick as he turned around and raised his own coffee to his lips. After a sip, he answered, “No. But I kissed her.”

“Who?” Jack asked, now clearly more interested in the conversation. He turned around so that he could look at Kendrick.

“Samantha.”

“Ah. So your trip to the diner worked,” Isaiah said. “Assuming she’s the waitress we met the other night.”

“She is,” Kendrick confirmed.

“What did you two do last night?” Isaiah asked.

Kendrick knew he wasn’t asking for the juicy details, only what they’d done on their date.

There weren’t any juicy details to give, anyway. He’d kissed her goodnight after walking her up to her door. And it had been a long kiss. Full embrace, too. The minute he’d held her was the best damn minute of his life.

But it hadn’t gone any further than that.

“Congratulations,” Isaiah told him.

Jack looked confused. “What am I missing?”

Isaiah answered him. “The other night, we stopped in a diner after fielding a Guard call. While we were there, Kendrick felt something toward the waitress we met. There was a noticeable chemistry. But…” He stood and looked at Kendrick. “You have said numerous times you need a Little. Can’t be with anyone else.”

Kendrick grinned. “Get this. She is a Little.”

“That’s why you felt that instant chemistry,” Isaiah noted. “Man, that’s awesome! I’m happy for you.”

Jack stood, also. “I’m happy for you, too. When do we get to meet her?”

“Tonight. I’ve invited her over for dinner. I’ve been bragging about my cooking and she wants to try it. Plus, I think she’ll fit right in around here.”

Jack and Isaiah looked at one another.

“What?” Kendrick probed.

“Your cooking? That’s going to drive the poor girl away!” Jack said.

Isaiah nodded. “He’s right. Best order takeout and just put it in our dishes, passing it off as your own.”
