We’re not going to do anything more and ruin this cute family moment, of course.

Family.

There’s a heavy word.

I’m not part of this family and I shouldn’t start thinking I am.

That’s not what this is.

We’re just two consenting adults having a good time, looking for a little heat between the cold void of our own relationship trauma and the asshole neighbors breaking into the house.

We’re just two people cuddling on the sofa.

Kane feels me tense and his hand slides up my back.

His fingers find a sliver of skin, tracing it absently.

“You good?” he murmurs.

“Yeah. Just thinking.”

“Don’t do that. Not while Maui’s singing.”

For joking around, he sounds so serious I laugh.

And I hear all the things he doesn’t say.

Don’t make this out to be more than it is.Or less.

His embrace deepens. I close my eyes for a second, relaxing in his warmth without guilt.

“Margot.” His lips brush my temple again, breath hot against my ear.

Even my bones tingle.

“Mmmm.” I press my face into his chest, loving the reassurance, before I look back at the screen. He exhales sharply, and we’re silent again until the movie finishes.

As the credits roll, Sophie yawns herself awake again, rubbing her eyes and blinking.

“You were snoring,” Dan says, suddenly wide awake and poking her side.

“I was not!”

“Yeah, you were loud. I’ve heard quieter jets take off!” Dan insists.

Kane claps his hands.

“Pipe down, kid. It’s been a long day.” He’s in no mood for a five-minute argument over snoring. “I’m getting tuckered out myself.”

As he sits up, I unfold from my spot under his arm.

“Are you turning in early too, Dad?” Dan asks, curious.

“Soon. Come on, guys, let’s head upstairs.” He picks Sophie up effortlessly.

She smiles and clings to him.

Holy hell.
