Did that really just happen?

I grab my bag and start the walk back to my locker only to run straight into Vicki.

“Do you really think he’s interested in you?” she asks.

“Just get straight to the point, why don’t you?” I roll my eyes and tumble the numbers on my locker padlock until it clicks open.

“It’s only a matter of time before we’re back together and he puts you in your place.”

I pull my books out of my locker one by one and put them into my bag.

“I’m talking to you.” Vicki shoves my shoulder.

“And I’m ignoring you.” I slide the last book in and close the locker door. “Goodbye, Vicki.”

Turning away, I walk down the hallway. I might look confident on the outside, but inside I want to crawl into a hole because people are looking.

“This isn’t over,” she yells.

Shaking my head, I make my way out to my car and throw my bag into the back seat before sliding into the front. For a moment, I close my eyes and take a deep breath.

This part of my life is over.

I never have to set foot in this place ever again.

And now I get to take two months off and relax in the summer sun before getting back into studying again.

My eyes fly open as the passenger door opens and Patrick slips into the seat, sliding down below the windscreen.

“What are you doing?” I side-eye him.

“Hiding from Vicki. Quick, let’s get out of here.” He shoots me a cheeky smile, and I’m frozen for a moment.

I start the car just as Vicki appears at the gate.

“You owe me,” I grumble.

Patrick chuckles as I pull out onto the street and drive in the direction of home.

“She’s been trying to talk to me for days, and I’m so done.”

“Really?” I stop at a red light.

“You don’t believe me?”

I shrug. “You were together a long time.”

He’s quiet for a moment. The light changes to green. “It took me a long time to realise how shallow my life was. I want more.”

Swallowing hard, I make the final turn into our street and pull into my driveway.

“Thanks.”

I swear his dimples twinkle at me.

“You’re welcome.”

He runs his tongue over his upper lip. “What are you up to tomorrow night?”
